I found it in the N.Y.State Library which is on the 7th floor of the Cultural Education building in Albany (not N.Y. City as one might think by the name) and was able to photocopy by use of an overhead copier about sixty pages or so of history on the family and genealogy charts. I hope to go back there and copy some more. If you are looking for an ancestor who was a Schermerhorn or married to a Schermerhorn it would be helpful to me if you list it like so: (this is my line b.t.w.): Harriet Schermerhorn b. 11 Oct 1814 (m. George Lansing)of Northumberland, N.Y. was dau. to : Cornelius K. Schermerhorn b. 2 Apr 1779 (m. to Catherine Sands) of either Saratoga Cty or Dutchess Cty (possibly Rhinebeck, NY), son of Jan Schermerhorn bap. on 11 Aug. 1752 (m. Catherine Knickerbocker of Linlithgow, Scotland) who was of Rhinebeck N.Y., who was son of: Ryer Schermerhorn bapt. 24 Feb. 1702 of (Albany...just so. of Albany apparently is or was "Schodack Landing" where this line of Schermerhor! ns were from/there is another line from Schenectady and still other lines all desc. from same ances. who will be mentioned at bottom of this email)This Ryer S. m. (first, Geertje Ten Eyck which is not my line)2nd wife (my line) was: Marritje Decker Osterhout (Osterhout may have been her former m. name as she was a widow when she marr. Ryer) Ryer S. was son of: Jacob Jacobse (Jacobse meaning son of (another)Jacob)Schermerhorn who was b. abt 1661 who m. Gerritie Hendrickse Van Buren; This Jacob Jacobse Schermerhorn was the son of: Jacob Jansen (son of Jan, in other words) Van Amsterdam Van Schermerhorn (expl. later on this name)and who m. Jannetje Cornelisen (dau. of Cornelius) Egmont Van Voorhout (I have lots of info on her name and lineage)and they were both from a place called "Schermerhorn" which in Dutch means: Scher "clear or bright" / mer "sea"/ horn "point" or a section of land a "point" jutting out to the sea in other words ...and this place called Schermerhorn was i! n a place called Waterland which is in Amsterdam, Holland. He used the double name to clarify where he was from and then dropped the Van Amsterdam and used Van Schermerhorn and subsequent gen. used only Schermerhorn. His father and anc. however only used their own first names followed by the nameof their own father which they added "sen" to however we see later in dutch tradition in America where they used "se" (I am not clear if se refers to one gender and sen to another, perhaps someone else can clarify). (He died after 1654 in Holland). His father was: Jan Jacobsen b. in 1590 in Schermerhorn, Waterland, Holland who m. ? who was the son of : Jacob Reyersen b. 1569 and who m. ? who was the son of: Reyer J. who was b. abt. 1541 in Holland. For any more info or if you wish me to photocopy all I have you will have to contact me and pay me for copies and postage. I am very very busy but if you are patient I can do this for you or post some data for you from what I have. I was very excited to find this book. It is falling apart, has some photos of! afew Schermerhorns and of a house where the Schodack Landing Schermerhorns lived which was so. of Albany apparently. Will try to post more info. another time. I can be reached at: gracefultruth@gmail.com or better to post ques. here so all can see and share what we relate re: this family.
