    1. [NYCOLUMB] Info on Miss Bassett second wife of Amos King of New Lebanon
    2. Daniel David Lewis Frommherz (3)
    3. Folks, I am still trying to find information on the second wife of Amos King of New Lebanon, Columbia County, New York. I recently posted what I had found in the first few hours after a discovery that there was a second wife. I will re-post this information later containing some updates for clarity. The only reply I received from this list was to try Benton County, Oregon where the oldest son of this line (Son of Amos and first wife Hopestill (AKA Haskins - father's surname Hoskins) King). I am of this line and we didn't know although it has been a head scratcher on how Hopestill born in 1741 could have children as late as 1811 basically birthing children in her 60th year if all 10 children were actually born to her and/or her birthyear is incorrect in the first place. The Oregon family of whom I contacted immediately and before this suggestion was raised did not know and were/are interested in this new find. So interested in fact that two of the family have designated a new title for MWAH - Ancient King Historian to which I would rather see this go to someone more deserving of the title (This title still costs or gets with $5.00 a Latte at Starbucks) who have been working tirelessly for this family. The following is what was now known on 19 October 2009. Folks over the last 48 hours (as of 19 October) or so we have discovered that our 4th great grandfather was married 2 times. The first was in 1781 in New Salem, Hampshire County (New Salem is in Franklin County when it was created in December 1811 our King's left this area in 1785) Massachusetts. We understand that the marriage was to Hopestill (AKA Haskins) Hoskins daughter of William and Mary (Cole) Hoskins IV. Two children were born to this union first child and son was Nahum on 25 July 1783 and William O. (Probably Oliver as two of his line took and used this as a middle name). He was born in 1785. The family then moved west for the free land due the Revolutionary War Veterans. After a bit of wandering Amos brought his family to Canaan, Columbia County, NY by the 1790 census. He took land in the Lebanon Springs Valley near the town of future town of New Lebanon. Our information on this family is that Hopestill (Haskins) King was living in 1798 or at least named when her father named his daughter as to receive legacy from his estate in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. This was not a gift but the use of the farm during her lifetime is she were to use it. I now understand the meaning and it appears that the will was not changed after her probably death about 1793 (Six children born). The following excerpt revealed that Mrs. King died after what was called a very short marriage (I am guessing 12 years is short was the meaning of this statement. The new information that I have discovered came from: "The History of Johnson County, Nebraska we learned recently that Hopestill birthed 6 children and died shortly (the time frame is basically another scratch your header what was short back then the marriage was shorter than that of the second wife?). Amos then married second to a Miss Bassett in or near Canaan who presented the family with 9 more children and subsequently raised 7 of them to maturity. I know of only the youngest two known children are Luther Hiram (1806, and Horace born September 1811. This post is about trying to find any information available on the Bassett Family with whom Amos married as his second wife. The sketch of the widow of Horace King (Desire Jane) revealed that Miss Bassett was of New York. At this time we first didn't know of the second marriage and still do not know when Hopestill King died or where Amos, Hope, and Mrs. ______ (Bassett) King are buried. Amos died in New Lebanon, Columbia County in June 1839 with only Luther Hiram of the children having remained there. Luther served as the executor of his father's estate and it appears that he left Columbia County shortly after all of the estate was settled. Luther Hiram and his wife Emeline Campbell had kept their family bible which recently came into my possession. Paternal (Grandmother's line) 4th great Grandson of Amos and Hopestill (Haskins) King.
