    3. Hi, I think the marriage record for 1847 is in the county clerks. Someone out there might know. They recorded for just a few years. Hillsdale, Columbia, NY, Methodist Episcopal Church Records Perhaps someone could tell me if there are church records available for the Methodist Episcopal Church, of North Hillsdale, Columbia, NY for the years 1820 through 1860. I am primarily looking for birth, baptism, and marriage records, for my Loop family . They include Capt Peter (1723-1824) 101 yrs,& wife... Louise Loop. David Loop (1757-1841, & Annie L. Dudly Loop, his wife (1777-1853), and the children of David & Annie, ...one son: Philyer Loop was born Hillsdale 17 Mar 1826 . I am looking for a baptism for Philyer, and a marriage to his wife Fanny Maynard Chapin on 14 Sept 1847. Fanny and Phyler had five children. The parents David Loop and Anna are buried in the Church Cemetery, N.Hillsadle so I assume they were members there. I don't see any Kinship Books listed for this Church. Any help, or suggestions, will be appreciated. Thank you. Bruce M. 1. [NYCOLUMB] Columbia County marriage records

    3. The Columbia County Clerk's Office has ledgers of very complete marriage records for 1908 - 1934. In 1881, all New York counties except those in New York City were required to start issuing marriage certificates (also for birth and death, although death certificates begin in 1880). Those marriage certificates can be obtained from the state, or from the local town, village, or city clerk where they were issued. The state received the original handwritten certificate after the local registrar copied the essential genealogical information into a local ledger. A few cities in NY started collecting vital records earlier than 1881. Of those, Albany, Buffalo, and Yonkers were allowed to keep working under their own systems. The state did not start receiving certificates from them until 1914, the first year the state has for those cities. In 1847, school districts in New York State were required to collect birth, marriage and death information. Some schools collected that information as late as 1851 or so. In 1942, the WPA (Work Projects Administration) collected information about where all existing vital records were stored in the state. For Columbia County, they reported finding only marriages from 1848. Those were for the Town of Copake. Arthur Kelly, of Kinship publishing company, published four journals which were collectively called Valley Quarterlies (published four times a year). In those he published records that he was not publishing in book form. Very few of these records have been published elsewhere. The quarterly for Columbia County was called The Columbia. Kelly found many more 1847 vital records than were located by WPA. A general index of each quarterly is published on the Kinship site, but I thought it was difficult to interpret. I rearranged the data a bit and made it into a webpage. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~clifflamere/OLists/KinQuart-ColCo.htm Kelly specialized in publishing baptism and marriage records of Reformed and Lutheran churches in Columbia and other counties. In the quarterlies, he published some death and membership records for these same churches. He he also published baptism and marriage records for churches of other denominations in the quarterlies. An example follows. Spencertown Methodist Church: Bap: 1867-1868 1/4, 3/3 Mar: 1838-1843 1/4; 1838-1844 2/4; 1844-1850 3/1; 1850-1858 3/2; 1858-1886 3/3; 1886-1896 3/4 "1838-1843 1/4" means that the marriage records for those years were in volume 1, number 4. The marriage records for this church were spread out over six journals. Kelly sells back issues and back volumes. He also sells every name indexes to each of his volumes ($6), and an every name CD to all four quarterlies (The Capital, The Columbia, The Mohawk, & The Saratoga) for the 15 years they were being published ($40).
