    3. Kingston Freeman, Feb 25: GERMANTOWN — The town will celebrate the 300th anniversary of the arrival of settlers from the Palatine region of southwest Germany over the first two weekends of October. The 300th Anniversary Committee is co-chaired by Nadine Rumke, a Palatine descendant, and Jeremy Smith, a Germantown Town Board member. The committee is enlisting the talents, skills and enthusiasm of Germantown residents to create what is expected to be the largest event the town has ever held. Noted historians and world-class genealogists have been invited to town to participate. Events will include Palatine history seminars, discussion groups, an ecumenical church service, and the debut of a new concert work by composer and conductor Harold Farberman, who makes his home in Germantown. Many other professional and amateur musicians from the town will also perform, including the Germantown Choir, led by Donna Diehl, singing early 18th century music. A sculpture, the Germantown Analemma, an astrological sundial, is being created by local artists and Palatine descendants Dea Archbold and Kurt Holsapple. The first weekend of the event will focus on town history and genealogy. Germantown’s senior citizens are sharing their memories and the stories they heard from their parents, to create an oral history of the town. History and genealogy experts are coming from around the country to discuss their Palatine findings. Doris Wheeler, a local Palatine descendant who specializes in tracing family roots through DNA testing, will also participate. Germantown Central School District students will present an original play about the Palatines and an ecumenical service will be held at the historic Christ Lutheran Church, home of a 1755 Nuremberg Bible used by the Palatines. The second weekend of the celebration will bring back the Germantown Oktoberfest, renamed the Palatine Oktoberfest. It will start with a wagon parade through town, followed by food, fun and festivities at Palatine Park.
