    1. [NYCOLUMB] G.A.R.Post Germantown, Columbia County, NY
    2. I am looking for information about a G.A.R Post in Germantown, Columbia County NY, or in the vicinity of Germantown, Clermont, or local area. Perhaps someone would share what they know about the Columbia County G.A.R. Posts? (Grand Army of The Republic) I believe it was a Veterans Orgazination of Civil War Vets. My great grandfather Hiram Smith (1836-1900) was a Civil War vet, and belonged to such a Post. Hiram lived much of his life, in Germantown, was married in Christ Lutheran Church, and buried in Viewmont Cemetery at the Clermont/Germantown line. Hiram, a Palatine descendant, had a farm located at 482 Church Avenue. The Smith family farm, sold by Hiram's daughter Bertha Alene Smith Quackenbush Teator to Modesto 'Tony' Decicco in 1956, is very near the Christ Lutheran Church, Viewmont. A Pond on the farm along the road is known as Teator Pond, and a favorite ice-skating Pond. Hiram's Grave site is marked by a metal GAR marker, and I understand is decorated like the other Veterans on Memorial Day with a flag. I would like to find out where Hiram most likely went to his GAR Post meetings. I discovered that the Gloversville Library across the River, has a GAR Post Roster Book for the Gloversville GAR Post. A real treasure, the Gloversville GAR Post book also contains a brief biography of each of the Posts Veteran membership. Perhaps something of that nature was done for Posts in Columbia County.? Certainly no one would have purposefully destroyed such a record. I will be grateful for any leads someone might have to share, or any suggestions. Thank you. Sincerely, Bruce M. Smith, Bayside, CA.
