    1. [NYCOLUMB] G.A.R Posts Columbia County, NY
    2. Perhaps someone knows if there was a G.A.R. Post (Grand Army of the Republic) located in Germantown, Columbia Co., NY ? Were there other Posts nearby or in the area? I am anxious to learn about it if possible. My great grandfather Hiram Smith, 1836-1900, a Civil War Veteran, was a member of a GAR Post, Hiram a Palatine family descendant lived much of his life in Germantown Columbia Co., and is buried in Viewmont Cemetery, Clermont/Germantown. Hirams farm, was sold by his daughter Bertha Alene Smith Quackenbush Teator in 1956 to Modesto "Tony" Decicco, and was located at 482 Church avenue ,very near the Christ Lutheran Church where Hiram was married and buried. Hiram's grave site has a metal GAR marker, and I understand the grave is decorated every year with the other veterans graves. I am trying to determine where Hiram might have been a member, and then of course, try to find membership records of that post. There was a Post across the River at Gloversville. The Gloversville library has an original Roster of the Gloversville GAR Post which includes a short biography of the members, certainly a treasure. I would like to discover similar or other such records, if possible, for Columbia County. I am hoping someone might read this and share information they might have, or know of, or suggest an avenue of pursuit . Any help will be appreciated, Sincerely, Bruce M. Smith, Bayside, CA. Thank you !
