Hoag is a familiar name in Nassau, Rensselaer County, one of the original settlers was Jonathan Hoag, who purchased several hundred acres from Stephen Van Rensselaer and settled there in 1792. He constructed Hoag's pond by building a dam and he is described as "perhaps the most industrious and progressive of the pioneers of Nassau." (Anderson's Landmarks of Rensselaer County)
