HUGH/HUGO BAIN/BENN/BEN/BANE married ELIZABETH SCOTT/SCHOTT 1715 Kingston, NY. He supposedly "sailed from Perth, Scotland." Where would I find a record of their marriage, Hugh's parents and his place of birth? I wish to hear from anyone researching this family. Thank you. Coral Benn Eady. British Columbia
Coral, The marriage did not take place at the Kingston Reformed Church, which performed the most marriages in that area. I checked the book under all Be-, Ba-, Sco- and Scho- spellings. Outside of church records, you have little chance of finding a marriage or birth record before 1800 in NY. Justice of the Peace records don't exist from that time period. I also checked "Names of Persons for Whom Marriage Licenses were Issued by the Secretary of the Province of New York, Previous to 1784". I checked all spellings that you mentioned. No luck there either. Nearby Hurley had a Reformed Church, but I don't believe those records have been published. An historical society tends them. I would suggest that you take a look at the website for Ulster County, and possibly get on that county's mailing list. Some counties may have special records not know to outsiders like me. Here is a link from my website that will help you find the website for any county in NY. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygenweb/county.htm Some counties have books that contain abstracts of wills. Kinship (publishing company) sells one for that county. It begins in 1665. You might be able to find parents in such a book. Kinship's catalog can be found at: http://www.kinshipny.com Good luck.
