    3. Can anyone tell me if I am reading the website correctly for description of cemeteries at Canaan, etc? [Columbia County Historical Society indices] are the cemeteries named after FARM owner? or after the original family who had the graves...in other words, would "Brown" cemetery be full of Browns or just on a "current" Brown farm?...same for Wilbur Plot etc..? I would like to order a number of pages from the Books but an not sure what I should be looking for? Since my Canadian money isnt worth much!! I am being cautious. thanks I would appreciate any help with this, Liz of BC/ Canada

    3. Liz, The transcriptions of the cemeteries to which reference is made were done about 1920-1975. I examined the descriptions of, and directions to, all 359 cemeteries and burying grounds in the cemetery books at Columbia Co. Historical Society. The small private burying grounds (sometimes called cemeteries) had to be given some sort of name by the transcriber. From what I could tell, the name used (often it was just made up) was sometimes based on the predominant surname present on tombstones. At other times it was named after the surname of the land owner of that time. Sometimes it was named after a previous land owner, especially, I believe, if the present owner had a different surname and the cemetery was no longer being used. I believe that two or three had no names in the books, because I seem to recall being forced to make up that many names myself (I would have based the name on whatever text was provided to give a location of the cemetery). I don't understand what you mean when you say, "I would like to order a number of pages from the Books but an not sure what I should be looking for?" It would seem that you may not have used the Columbia Co. Master Burial Index to select the names of the people for whom you want records. If not, you should do that first.
