To whoever in the Vosburgh line receives this: Rick Coon from Kauai recently sent me your address and suggested that I write you an e-mail. My great grandmother's name was Sarah Vosburgh, born in Upper Red Hook, I believe, and married to William Coon. In the early 1960s my grandfather, Whitney Losee Coon, took us to the cemetery by the Little Red Church in Tivoli and pointed out the grave sites of his ancestors. They are on the south side of the church, and are marked as far as I know: In Memory of Martin Vosburgh who departed this life 6th of May, 1801--62 years 9 months, 22 days--Veteran '61-65. Just south of his tomb stone, and badly disintegrated, is his wife's marker: In Memory of Cornelia, wife of Martin Vosburgh, who departed this life November the 20th, 1809, aged 65 years. My grandfather always believed that Cornelia was a native American; however, researching one year in the genealogical library in Bennington, Vermont, we came upon records that indicated that her last name may have been Gilbert. Those records also indicated that Martin Vosburgh was in the Sixth Regiment of the Dutchess County Militia (Land Bounty Rights) and that on November 19, 1766 he and Cornelia Gilbert were married. In a volume on Land Papers I read: "1772, July 8. Bond of Ebenezer Jessup to Martin Vosburgh, Anthony Hoffman and others, that they shall be admitted associates in Totten and Crossfield's purchase." If my records are correct, George Schoonmaker Vosburgh was born on April 6, 1814. He would have been my great grandmother's father. He married, interestingly enough, a woman named Fanny Coon in Gallatin, New York, December 20, 1837. The couple had three boys, all of them who died in infancy. Fanny, wife of George Vosburgh, I have recorded, died at Red Hook "after a short and distressing illness, much lamented, on the 15th of September, 1842, aged 23 years 11 months. Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." On March 19, 1846, George married Maria Proper in Clermont, New York, yielding ten kids, Sarah Margaret, my great grandmother, was their second child. I DO have a picture of Maria and some of their daughters. George died on Easter, 1891, at the age of 77, and Maria on August 12, 1910, at the age of 81.
