Sara was either Gardiner or Gardenier in the records, but not Gardinier. Johannes A. Vosburgh md. Sara Gardenier at Linlithgo RDC. Her name was Gardiner (non-Dutch) in the marriage record, but it was correctly spelled as Gardenier at the baptisms of three children and a possible fourth child (from the way this last record was recorded, it is difficult to tell if she was the parent or a witness). The children were baptized at Kinderhook RDC where there were many Gardeniers. Kelly consistently interprets the name as Gardenier in his transcription. Pieter's baptism: Baptized 22 Nov 1778. Pieter, of Johannes A: Vosburg and Sara Gardenier [sic]. Wit.: Pieter A: Vosburg and Helena Gardenier [sic] Marriage license or marriage bond: 15 May 1765 John Abraham Vosburgh [sic] and Sarah Gardiner [sic]. Gardiner is a British spelling and people of that surname are unrelated. Gardenier is the original name. Gardinier is a misspelling which became popular in the 1800s, but I have not tried to determine when any family first consistently used it. At this point, I have noticed that spelling once in 1730 and twice in the 1600s. Those were isolated Gardinier spellings. Cliff
