    3. Hi Margaret, I found a Jehiel Smith in the Town of Pawling, Dutchess County paying taxes from the years 1773-1778. Also listed are Edward, years 1775-1778, Edward, Jr., years 1778 and Philip, years 1775-1778. This is from the book "Dutchess County, NY Tax Lists, 1718-1787 by Clifford M. Buck with Rombout Precinct by William Willis Reese edited by Arthur and Nancy Kelly, Kinship, Rhinebeck, NY 1990. Hope this helps in your search.
