Nannette, There appear to have been 2 Cole families in Columbia County at that time according to American Ancestry: Alexander Cole of Ghent b. 1798 d. 1882 who married Mary Fowler and J.H. Cole of Claverack b. 1806 who married Esther P. Cooke. Alexander's father is listed as Adam of Ghent.b. circa 1768. He married a Katy NLN. J.H. Cole was the son of Peter Cole of Hudson, b.1766,d.1823. These are the only Coles who still lived in Columbia County in 1887 whose ancestors setttled in the USA before the Declaration of Independence. Perhaps it will help you.
