Richard, There is a well-researched Wielaer/Wheeler genealogy at Rootsweb. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gwheelertree&id=I1 1171 There is no known record of John's birth or baptism. I agree with the reasoning for the placement of John as found at the above. Hope you are safe! Lots of rain in such a short period of time. It has been over 100 for the past 22 days here in Redding, California. It was 113 for two days. Our summers are always hot, but we have low humidity and it cools off at night. Enjoy you genealogy informaion and history 'lessons'. My families (SMITH-MOUL-BASSETT-NELSON) were in Rensselaer. Columbia and Saratoga counties in the early 1800 or before. Your Feb. 2009 informaion about Dutch names was very helpful. My gr gr grandfather was Peter SMITH Jr. so I thought his father must be Sr. Your informaion has me searching in other directions too. My gr grandfather was Peter P. SMITH, b. 1822, may have used "P" as his middle initial because his father was also Peter. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Mary (SMITH) ELKINS > Kinderhook got 5" of rain yesterday. Does anyone know the name of the island in the Hudson River between Athens and Hudson? I grew up in Columbia County, my mom lived in Hudson for 20 years after that and I don't know the name of the island. I was looking right at the island this past Saturday and I'd really like to know. I've been trying to find more information on Daniel Hoyt who lived in Hudson when his wife Nancy died in 1808. I've just read that a Daniel Haight began manufacturing satinets and woolen goods in Canaan, NY in 1830. Does anyone have any information on Daniel Haight? Could he be the same person as Daniel Hoyt of Hudson? Thank you. Debbie
I grew up near Linlithgow (north of Germantown) but never knew the names of any of the islands, although I loved them all. Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. Hi, I would try the 1865 state census for Columbia Co., New York. You could order it from the LDS or contact the Columbia County Historical Society in Kinderhook, NY, to see if they could help you. Correction: Yesterday, I misspoke about Chapinville, CT changing name to Taghkanic,Columbia,NY. It was changed to Taconic,CT., and is located there today, next to one of the Twin Lakes near the corner Junctions of Mass/CT/NY border area. Sorry for my confusion. It was a stop on the Central New England Railway. The Chapinville Village name was changed by the Post Office Department, because they had too many "ville's". I am still interested in the Chapin family, and the Loup family of Hillsdale, Columbia, NY. 1848-1857. Philyer Loup, (son of David & Anna Dudly (Loup), was a Miller by trade, with his wife, Fanny Maynard Chapin (Loup), (dau of Abiel Chapin & Fanny Maynard (Chapin). Phyler(sp), and Fanny had five children born Hillsdale. They were living in Stockport in 1860. Phyler died in Hudson, NY. after 1880. Some children went on to Erie, PA., and survivors on to Ohio. Best wishes, Bruce M. Smith

Hi. I tried to email Susan Mulvey from the ALHGP web site and Comcast told me that she wasn't their customer. Susan, I have a scan of a postcard of downtown Philmont to send you. Debbie
Perhaps someone can assist with some advice. I have late 1700, early 1800, Chapin family from Chapinville, CT. It is written in a Salisbury Historical site that Chapinville was started by a group of twenty Dutchmen from Rhinebeck, NY.which is close by. I am trying to find out more about Chapinville. Apparently it was between Rhinebeck/ North East, and Twin Lakes.and Salisbury CT. but after the Border dispute between NY and CT Chappenville became Taconic Town in NY, which may have included Hillsdale ? A Salisbury CT historical site lists this information, but the Columbia County site for the area doesn't have a glimmer of this history. Would anyone have a suggestion where I could discover more about this Chappinville, and its early people ?. That early in time I have begun to believe that the Village of Chapinville must have been named for part of this Chapin family. Thanks for any suggestions, or pointers. My Smiths were in Germantown and Clermont, Columbia, on the Manor. Best wishes, Bruce M. Smith, Bayside, CA.
