Author: davewb07 Surnames: Norman, Wood Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.columbia/4885/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Seeking any information on William E Norman. The reason for my interest is because of my ancestor Sarah Norman, who I know little of, who was supposed to have been born in Hudson, NY on 10 Feb 1815. Sarah Norman married a Fredercik Wood (1815-1877) before 1841 most likely New York City. Sarah Norman Wood died in Bridgeport, CT on 25 Feb 1893. I noted William E Norman in a transcript of the Hudson City, NY cemetery at the Columbia County, NJ USGen Web site. William E Norman was born in about 1778 in Wellington, Somersetshire, England and died in Hudson on 13 Nov 1828. The headstone for William's wife Rachel indicates she was born on Nantucket Island and and died at the age of 68 on 23 Aug 1848 in Hudson. There are also three headstones for three children on William E and Rachel Norman: 1. Robert C or O, eldest son of William E & Rachel, Sept 4, 1802 - May 27, 1830 2. Sarah, daughter of W.E. and & Rachel, Feb 4, 1814, 3 m. 3. Elizabeth, daughter, Sept 1, 1819, 4 m., 18 d. It is interesting that "my" Sarah Norman, wife of Frederick Wood, was born a year after the death of the Sarah Norman buied in Hudson. If "my" Sarah Norman is the daughter of William E and Rachel Norman she was likely named for the Sarah Norman who died as an infant in 1814. Would appreciate hearing from anyone having an interest in this Norman family of Hudson, NY or having any information that might confirm that "my" Sarah Norman was a daughter of William E and Rachel Norman. 1. [NYCOLUMB] Columbia County marriage records
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. The Columbia County Clerk's Office has ledgers of very complete marriage records for 1908 - 1934. In 1881, all New York counties except those in New York City were required to start issuing marriage certificates (also for birth and death, although death certificates begin in 1880). Those marriage certificates can be obtained from the state, or from the local town, village, or city clerk where they were issued. The state received the original handwritten certificate after the local registrar copied the essential genealogical information into a local ledger. A few cities in NY started collecting vital records earlier than 1881. Of those, Albany, Buffalo, and Yonkers were allowed to keep working under their own systems. The state did not start receiving certificates from them until 1914, the first year the state has for those cities. In 1847, school districts in New York State were required to collect birth, marriage and death information. Some schools collected that information as late as 1851 or so. In 1942, the WPA (Work Projects Administration) collected information about where all existing vital records were stored in the state. For Columbia County, they reported finding only marriages from 1848. Those were for the Town of Copake. Arthur Kelly, of Kinship publishing company, published four journals which were collectively called Valley Quarterlies (published four times a year). In those he published records that he was not publishing in book form. Very few of these records have been published elsewhere. The quarterly for Columbia County was called The Columbia. Kelly found many more 1847 vital records than were located by WPA. A general index of each quarterly is published on the Kinship site, but I thought it was difficult to interpret. I rearranged the data a bit and made it into a webpage. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~clifflamere/OLists/KinQuart-ColCo.htm Kelly specialized in publishing baptism and marriage records of Reformed and Lutheran churches in Columbia and other counties. In the quarterlies, he published some death and membership records for these same churches. He he also published baptism and marriage records for churches of other denominations in the quarterlies. An example follows. Spencertown Methodist Church: Bap: 1867-1868 1/4, 3/3 Mar: 1838-1843 1/4; 1838-1844 2/4; 1844-1850 3/1; 1850-1858 3/2; 1858-1886 3/3; 1886-1896 3/4 "1838-1843 1/4" means that the marriage records for those years were in volume 1, number 4. The marriage records for this church were spread out over six journals. Kelly sells back issues and back volumes. He also sells every name indexes to each of his volumes ($6), and an every name CD to all four quarterlies (The Capital, The Columbia, The Mohawk, & The Saratoga) for the 15 years they were being published ($40). 3. Hi Bruce, I know of no records for this church. Here is a paragraph about the church from the book "Columbia County at The End of the Century" Two volumes, published and edited under the auspices of the Hudson Gazette, The Record Printing and Publishing Co., Hudson, New York, 1900, Volume 1, p. 586" "North Hillsdale Methodist Episcopal Church was formed some time between 1810 and 1815 --no records being found to verify the date. The first church building was erected in company with the Baptists. In 1837 the present structure was erected and dedicated in the fall of 1838; it cost $3,500. In 1859 it was repaired and enlarged at a cost of $1,500. It was incorporated in 1838 as the "Wesleyan Chapel of North Hillsdale."
