Clare, The only way for you to know is to inquire at the local level. On the state level, New York State did not require vital records until 1880 but they were not enforced until some years later. But, go ahead and inquire at the local level since they may have kept some records or know where some may be stored for that time period. In New York State, a death certificate for a person who died at least 50 years ago is available in two places; the NYS Dept of Health, and the locality in which the person died. Your relative died in Valatie, which is a village. The village clerk is the person to contact. Valatie is in the Town of Kinderhook. If a person died outside the village, but in the Town, the town clerk would issue the certificate. In the case of a city, the city clerk should be contacted. The county does not issue death certificates. The original hand written certificate is sent to the state. It will have the signature of the person giving the personal information, plus the signature of the doctor and undertaker. Locally, they copy all of the significant genealogical information into a ledger. To generate a certificate, the clerk copies the ledger information onto the form. The cost is $22 from either source. The state form has more information, but takes several months longer to get. Also, if you call the local town or village office, they will often tell you if they have the certificate. The state will not tell you ahead of time. They charge the fee even if they don't have the certificate. Many cities will not look up the death ahead of time. They also charge for a failed search. The clerk in a small office is usually less busy, so they may do a search while you wait. Is that the one on 401 Union Street in Hudson? My great-great-grandparents, Morris and Kathryn Higgins both died in Hudson, Kathryn in 1863 and Morris in 1879. I had also found the same info in footnote.com regarding the Revolutionary War soldier John Halverstadt/Halberstadt. I'm not sure if he is mine or not yet. Also Arthur C.M. Kelly did a search for me a year ago and found the Gebhard entries at Kinderhook. What I really need to find is a marriage entry for "Jane Son" who married a Holvenstot/Halberstadt around 1800 or so somewhere near Chatham. This has been a real brick wall for me. Ten Broeck in the District of the Manor of Livingston. It says "A list of said persons excused from going down to North Castle with the reasons why" A John Halverstadt was paid 14 (the heading says dollars) and was paid a sum of 1-12-0 and the reason why he did not go was "Alone making shoes." This was for the dates 27 & 28 December 1776. I also checked the book "Settlers and Residents, Town of Livingston 1710-1899" Complied by Arthur C.M. Kelly, Kinship, Rhinebeck, NY 1978 and did not find any reference to this family. Also in the Dutch Reformed Church of Claverack baptisms is Lewis P. Gebhard and Mary Ann Halberstat baptised Anna Maria Herriot born Feb. 24, baptised Jun 30, 1816. But after doing some research of Lewis P. Gebhard son of Rev. John Gabriel Gebhard, it seems this Mary Ann Halberstat was from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and she would be about 20 years younger than Nancy. Regards, Susan M.
