    2. Lois, Your deed should lead you to the location of that property- Gale Hill road is in what is now the Town of Lebanon in the northern part of Columbia .Co. Case is an old name in that area - also was called the New Britain area- Town of Lebanon has a Historical Society which might be of more help than the assessors office. 3. The divorce angle is just conjecture, but I am certain that the family that was in Canaan in 1860 is the same as was in Pittsfield in 1870. The names and ages of all the children match, as do the birth places, etc. -----Original Message----- From: nycolumb-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nycolumb-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Wendy McLean Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 8:37 PM To: nycolumb@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYCOLUMB] Fallon / Follen / Folland - in Canaan c. 1860 to 1870 Thanks, Elsie. For what it's worth, based on the surrounding surnames, I think they lived along the Canaan/Lebanon/Massachusetts border. Perhaps attended church in New Lebanon, which did have a Catholic parish by 1860. There were some grand farms where John may have worked as a "farm laborer" which is his listed occupation. Maybe even worked at one of the Shaker communities. I'm not sure when the Shakers started hiring outside labor, but it was common by the early 20th century to hire men to do the heavy farming work. I have trouble with the notion of a divorce at that time. Maybe Bridget couldn't marry in the Church because her new husband wasn't Catholic. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jaharder88 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.columbia/4899.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi again, I found what you must already know: there were two Asa Douglas, the father lived in Stephentown, the son in Canaan. The Stephentown house isn't the one you were looking for, but obviously also was owned by your ancestors. It's odd that both Stephentown and Canaan claim their Douglas house to be the site of the Revolutionary jail. An old Douglas book says it was the Stephentown one. Asa Douglas, Sergeant Birth: 11 DEC 1715 in Plainfield, Windham Co., CT Death: 12 NOV 1792 in Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY Father: William Douglas , Deacon b: 19 FEB 1672 in New London, CT Mother: Sarah [Proctor?] b: 1674 in New London, CT Marriage: Rebecca Wheeler? b: 26 AUG 1718 in Plainfield, Windham Co., CT; 13 children. Bio: Asa moved from Plainfield to Old Canaan, NY, about 1746, and remainded there some 20 years. In 1776 he removed with his family to what was at that time Jerico Hollow, MA, but was subsequently included in Stephentown NY. His son William preceeded him the year before. When Asa came he brought with him a company of men who cleared 30 acres of land and built a large farm house. The nearest neighbor was 4 miles a way, and they were obliged to go 14 miles to the nearest sawmill. The garret of the house was used during the Revelotionary War as a jail, there being at that time none in the county. Eleven years later, sixty-one year old Asa Douglas struck his blow for freedom when he led a company of thirty "Silver Grays" at the Battle of Bennington, on the 16th of August, 1777, when the force of British and Indians sent to seize the stores collected at that place were defeated by the Americans under Col. John Stark. Disguised as an old farmer looking for his lost cows, Douglas acted as a spy at the siege of Ticonderoga. He left his horse outside the lines and proceeded boldly into the enemy lines. When he mounted his horse to go home, someone called, "The old farmer is a spy!" Then, as the shooting began, Asa said to his horse, "Old Ti, ride for your life and if you get me home safely, you will never be saddled again." It is said that he kept his word and "Old Ti" lived happily in the pasture for the rest of his life. Asa continued to reside in Stephentown till the time of his death. His widow survived him some 14 years. Asa Douglas Jr, Major Birth: 24 DEC 1739 in Plainfield, Windham Co., CT Death: 17 APR 1812 in Canaan, Columbia Co., NY Father: Asa Douglas Mother: Rebecca Wheeler Marriage 1: Sarah Robbins b: Eastfield, CT; 10 children. Marriage 2: ? Wynkoop b. Albany, NY. Bio: Asa moved with his wife Sara to Canaan, NY, and became a large farmer in that town. He also raised large numbers of horses for sale. He took part in the Revolutionary war and became a Major in the Continental Army. He made himself so troublesome to the British that a large reward was offered for his apprehension. When Burgoyne was marching from Canada to meet Clinton at Albany, and so cut off New England from the other provinces, it became necessary for Maj. Douglas to take to the woods. He spent weeks in the forests, never staying two nights in the same place. He lost all his property and was imprisioned a long time for debt. After the death of his first wife, he married a lady by the name of Wynkoop, from Albany, whether he then removed. After spending ten years in Albany, in mercantile pursuits, he returned to Canaan, NY, where he died. He is buried, together with his wives and other of his family, in the old cemetery in that town. All his children were born there. Bio Source: "A Collection of Family Records with Biographical Sketches Bearing the Name Douglas"; Charles Henry James Douglas, Providence, 1879. 3. Why? I realize that you may mean well but I need to know why you would suggest contacting that clan. Please give me a reasonable explanation as to why they would have a clue. The Oregon clan has actually missed the boat since the only possible way that even they would allow this to float was if and this is really iffy Hopestll was not born in 1741. It would have been impossible for Hopestill King to birth 10 children and be 60 years old to have the last of them. So I could bet the answer would be, "they don't", as far as I have researched that line of the oldest son born to Amos and Hopestill (AKA Haskins) King. If you know something that they don't please tell us all. For the fact that Amos spent the remainder of his live from shortly before 1790 (land records of Columbia County filed in Hudson) to his death in June 1839. His birth has been established as New Salem, Hampshire County, Massachusetts and he was a Revolutionary War Veteran of several campaigns. The original question was Amos was married twice with 15 children born to both women. The wife of Horace King born 1811, Mrs. Desire Jane Burton reminisces from Johnson County, Nebraska after the death of her husband in September 1885 on Todd Creek. which leads us to the fact that the first wife and mother Hopestill may have been deceased by 1798 when her name as Hopestill King was listed in the probate or the will of her father in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. It is quite clear that oldest son Nahum departed Columbia County at least by 1807 when he married 15 year old Sarepta Norton daughter of James Alexander and Dulianna (Howe) Norton born 1791 in Geneses County, New York (partitioned to Cattaraugus County 1810) In Albany, Albany County, New York. Nahum then took his young bride west of the Geneses River for a short time and the purpose is unknown. He then turns back to Rutland County, Vermont. The location of his brides maternal grandparents John and Chloe (Rowlson) Howe. This is where the first 2 daughters of his 16 children were born before he arrives on the Little Darby Creek, Phelps Township, Madison County, Ohio where there is the birth of third daughter Hannah in the spring of 1811. I wanted to know more about the second marriage to Miss Bassett and the names of her 9 children. For what it is worth Hopestill being older born 1741 could not have been the mother of those King children as she would have been 60 years old with the last of even 10 children she was supposed to have birthed. My own research proves that 6 known children born quickly to Amos and Hope were Nahum July 1783, William O. 1785, Amos Jr. 1787, Lovisa 1789, Lydia 1791, Isaac 1783 thus making the marriage just short of 10 years. Hopestill because of distance may not have informed her father of her death and or the will just was not changed. The grave has not been found to date (19 October 2009). The grave of Amos has not been found as well nor has that of the second Mrs. King. Daniel 3rd (Paternal Grandmother) Great Grandson of Nahum King who settled King's Valley Benton County (then Polk County) by leading his 9 surviving children up the Luckiamute River from the Willamette Valley on 17 April 1846. ----- Original Message ----- From: <mottob@comcast.net> To: <nycolumb@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 10:21 AM Subject: Re: [NYCOLUMB] NYCOLUMB Digest, Vol 4, Issue 54 > Try Kings Valley, Benton Co., OR
