Richard, I have no information on Jan Jurrianse Becker and his family in Albany or elsewhere. You'll find the Antonius/Tunis Becker I'm referring to on p.40 of Jones' PFNY 1710. He had 3 documented children with Anna Eva Dick, all sponsored by Herders: Wilhelm - 16 Apr 1745 Germ. RC sp. Wilhelm Herder [bt 1721 Goderoth, Germany son of Joh. Philip Harter] and [wife] Maria [Margaretha Linck] Herderin. Wilhelm md. Christina Jager and had 8 ch. bt. at Manorton and Linlithgo, inc. sons Wilhelm 1778 and Henrich 1781, as well as an unnamed ch. in 1775, but none are really old enough to be the father of Margaret in 1792, unless it’s the 1775 "son" and she was born 1795. Christina - 26 Dec 1746 Germ. RC sp. Nicolaus Dick and Christina [Herder, bt. 1718 Goderoth, dau. of Joh. Philip]. Joh. Henrich -17 Apr. 1755 Linlithgo RC sp. Hendrick Bernhard and Anna Maria Herder [bt. 1723 Goderoth dau. of Joh. Philip]. Henrich]. Henrich had at least 2 children with Anna Maria Herder, bt. 1756 Germantown RC dau. of Joh Peter Herder & Anna Maria Schaffer: Anna (illegitimate) 1777 Germ. RC, Petrus 1778 Manorton. I’m pretty sure Tunis who md. Catherine Best fits in this group. (I said Elizabeth last post). They were md 1797 Clav. and had Gritje 1797 Clav, Christina 1799 Linl, Another Tunis md. Maria/Polly Gardner and had Getty Jane 1822 Germ., David Rd. 1820 Churchtn, Yet another Tunis md. Catherine and had Mary 1806 at Manorton. Of course there are many other Beckers from the Albany and Palatine families around; I can’t figure them all out. Jim
Hi Jim, Geertje Jelles Fonda married Tunis Cornelise Slingerland on 9 Apr 1684 in Albany DRC. He might be the Tunis that the other persons who were named Tunis was named for. Do you have a date of death for Jan Jurrianse Becker? Geertje Jelles Fonda marriage date was before Jan Jurrianse Becker's will was dated. I have all of Hank Jones' Palatine books. I will check them and see what I can find. Richard
Hi guys, Jim, I noticed when I posted the 1839 marriage that I didn't have a citation and haven't found it. I believe it was a Hudson newspaper item from Kelly's collection. The cemetery and census data seem conclusive that Margaret Becker was John's second wife, and the Ten Broeck Bible record I noted had John Harder's info, which confirms it's the same Margaret, but there's no marriage date there. The Lovina Becker clue has the same names in the same decade in the same area, as John and Gertrude were apparently in Hillsdale at some point. I tracked down that Peter Becker; he's an older guy born 1759 son of Johannes Becker (s/o Laurens) & Cat. Burger, who md Maria Southard dau. of Benj. Southard & Maria Ostrom in 1781, with lots of children and no room for Gertrude, but possibly Margaret could fit if there was supporting evidence. All his early records from Rhinebeck RC. He's a descendant of the early Jan Jurrianse Becker of New Amsterdam. Richard, I’m anxious to figure out these Beckers as well, but I don’t know if they are going to fit into your Becker group. It’s my feeling based on the early relationship between the families of Johann Philip Harter and Antonius Becker of Germantown – and the name Tunis that shows up later, that these women are from the Palatine Becker family there, descendents of Peter Becker of Niederbieber & wife Anna Elis. Haas. Unfortunately, records of this group seem incomplete, like who is the Tunis who married Elisabeth Best? I wouldn’t be surprised if he is the father of Gertrude. Margaret could be an aunt, a cousin or not related at all! Jim H.

Folks, someone sent me a cemetery record recently. The name started with Green something for Columbia County, New York which stated the contents of a stone for Amos King Jr. died 1815 in his 37th year. I back tracked and found that if this is so then he could have been born in 1787. I have no idea if he is who I think he might be since I now know that my fourth great grandfather Amos King and Hopestill (AKA Haskins) Hoskins had only 6 children raised to maturity before her death about 1793 or a little less than 12 years into the marriage. If he (Amos Jr.) is who I hope that he is....He may have had siblings known to have been born in New Salem, Hampshire County, Massachusetts and Columbia County New York 2 in the first and 6 in the second. The parents as I stated were married in 1781 in New Salem. The children known to have been born are: Nahum King 25 July 1783, William Oliver King 1785 both in New Salem. The recorda of Massachusetts give that they left New Salem in 1785. We know that children born in Columbia County New York were Lovisa King in 1789, Lydia in 1791, and Isaac in 1793. This leaves a huge gapping hole in the line up where Amos King Jr. could easily fit. Until just days ago and finding in the History of Johnson County, Nebraska Todd Creek Disrict a historical sketch on Horace and Desire Jane King and 3 of 5 sons. Each with a prosperous farm next to one another. One of the sketches tell of the life of Desire Jane as a new widow that her father in law was Amos King and that he had 6 children by his first wife and 9 children by his second whom he married after the death of wife one (Hopestill) the second wife is only identified as Miss Bassett of New York. It has long been a thorn in our sides (descendents of Nahum King 1845 in the Oregon Territory) which figured that Hopestill was born in 1741 but that she had 10 children in both New Salem and Canaan (the farm becomes New Lebanon Springs later). However if the last one was born in 1811 how could a more than 60 year old woman be having children at that age? Go figure on that one please. The only thing that we could figure was that the birth year was incorrect; However nobody could account for a more accurate birth date for this woman. Apparently from this new information the birth year is correct and she had children continually into her 40's. We also had the will of her parents William Hoskins and Mary Cole Hoskins which in this record William gave the use of but not ownership to 3 daughters in Norfolk county, Massachusetts. Since it was the use of until their deaths who is to say that in 1798 they changed the will for distance and what if without knowing it or maybe they did needed to change the award and legacy that she would have come to use as her inheritance. Hi Jim, OK. They are two different women. I had the baptism records, the 1826 Kinderhook marriage, and the Union Cemetery records. The Hillsdale Old Cemetery records were new to me and I can confirm them and have revised my database. I can't find the follwing record: <John second married Margaret Becker (1792 - 1868) at Ghent 30 Nov 1839.> Is that a non-church citation that would also indicate that she was the same Margaret Becker who married earlier William Ten Broeck. I have that Ten Broeck marriage and their children in my database. I don't see Lavina Becker as a clue here, other than that she also married a Ten Broeck. <Gertrude Maria BECKER. Born on 4 Dec 1806. Died on 16 Aug 1838. Buried in Old Cemetery., Hillsdale, Columbia Co., NY.> Do you have a source for the birthdate? The gravestone indicates a calculated birthdate of circa Dec. 1805. [I'm used to incorrect calculated dates from gravestones.] I'm intrigued because that matches the birthdate for the Catharine Maria Becker I mentioned in my earlier e-mail. Anybody out there have a Becker genealogy? Hi Jim, The discussion of the Beckers and Ten Broecks was quite interesting to me. William Ten Broeck is a 5th or 6th cousin of mine. I have his family on my website at www.angelfire.com/ga4/myhayes_family/. I did not have Cornelia Christina as one of his children. I have many Beckers on my website, but I do not have parents for either Gertrude or Margaret. I would like to tie them into the rest of the family. Richard

Hi Jim, I had been working of the assumption that Gitty Maria and Margaret were the same woman. I've seen the Mellenville Cemetery records for John Harder and wife, but haven't seen a burial record for Gertrude Maria. Could you offer a citation for that? A thought comes to mind. I've noticed that in some baptismal records Geddy or Gitty is used for girls also named Catharine. I wonder if this Claverack baptism is the one you're looking for: 199, #4352, 1807, 1.4. Catharine Maria, born (12).4.1806, of David Becker and Maria van Benshoten. Sponsors the parents. Also note that she had a brother Thunis baptized same place: 148, #3225, 1799, 8.11. Thunis, born 7.22, of David Decker and Maria van Benshoten. Sponsors the parents. Maybe there was an earlier born older sister Margaret that I haven't seen a record for? Hi, I finally found the maiden name of my ggggrandmother Sally Moore. I, along with many others, have been searching for years. She was Sally Ames, born Feb 28, 1798 in New York (probably Columbia or Dutchess). Her family most likely moved to Ontario, Canada sometime after her birth because she married John Moore, son of Henry and Sarah (Cornell) Moore who migrated to Ontario c.1800. Does anyone have any knowledge of her or her family? I know nothing about the Ames surname at all. Any tips will help. Thank you.

I have scanned your information and on the surface it seems to fit. My first response is that Alson Knight, Catherine's first child was born and lived in Brome. He married Betsey Cornell in 1851 in St-Armand-Est. Do you have a date for the death of John Pickle, Jr? I suspect that Nathaniel Knight died and is buried in the area also. Alson ran the leather mill at Adamsville before he moved to the Boston Area. I found George W Knight on the 1861 Census in East Farnham. He had married a woman from Poland, Maine and they lived there from about 1854-1867. I have not been able to prove That George W was born in Qc or Vt. I suspect the latter. I have found little about John A Knight and I have been able to document that Almira and Chris C Knight claimed to have been born in Qc.
