    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. Mary Richardson wrote the following email to the Rensselaer Co. mailing list. It presents an interesting way to be clear about surname plurals. I thought it was worth passing it on to this mailing list. Cliff Lamere ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks, Cliff. I shared your comments with my fellow list administrators. One of them responded that he uses the same convention that I use to clarify surname plurals: "I do appreciate the apostrophe issue though, and although not a grammar freak, I do like to avoid ambiguity where possible. That's where an often used genealogy (how many folk spell that incorrectly?) convention has a big advantage - the use of capital letters for family names. One of my names is CUMMING, and there is the similar, but nowadays distinct family of CUMMINGS. I can simply use CUMMINGs to denote the plural and be fairly confident to not be misinterpreted." Regards, Mary Richardson

    1. Re: [NYCOLUMB] [NYALBANY] Plurals of surnames
    2. Cliff, Some good pointers for sentence construction. I would just hasten to point out that another proper use of the apostrophe with names would be as follows, "The Wilsons' genealogy is enclosed." This would be an example of plural possessive such as for a specific Wilson family as opposed to, "The Wilsons genealogy is enclosed." which would imply all Wilson families. Dave -----Original Message----- From: Cliff Lamere <clifflamere@nycap.rr.com> To: nyalbany@rootsweb.com; nycolumb@rootsweb.com; nyrensse@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, Jan 1, 2010 4:32 pm Subject: [NYALBANY] Plurals of surnames A very common punctuation error in genealogy is the use of the postrophe followed by an 's' to create the plural of a surname. Exampled (Examples) of that wrong usage follows: There are seven Chadwick's on the census page." Has anyone found obituaries for any Horner's in this county?" The error is becoming so common that it had me wondering if it was I who as doing it wrong. A little research had confirmed that an apostrophe should NOT be used to ake the plural of a surname. Gardner's is incorrect as a plural, but orrect to show possession (as in "Betty Gardner's pie was great."). The following plurals are correct. For most surnames, simply add an 's' o form the plural of it. Smith --> Smiths ailey --> Baileys ardner --> Gardners an Woert --> Van Woerts However, if the name ends in an , x, ch, sh, or a z, he plural is formed by adding an -es. Jones --> Joneses addox --> Maddoxes arch --> Marches ush --> Rushes artinez --> Martinezes http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/apostro.asp See Rule 5. I wish you all a very happy and healthy 2010. 1. [NYCOLUMB] Plurals of decades and centuries, etc.
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. The email about the plurals of surnames was well received, so I thought I would mention another place where the apostrophe is misused by genealogists. The plural of a decade or century should not contain an apostrophe. For example, 1740's and 1900's are incorrect. They should be 1740s and 1900s. http://www.ohio.edu/publications/editor.html See 5.1. As another website said, "Apostrophes indicate possession or contractions, not plurality." An example of a contraction would be, "She graduated in '65." That is a proper use of the apostrophe with dates. While we are on the topic of plurals, if you are looking at a book of baptism records that lists the date of birth for each person, how would you express the plural of 'date of birth?' Would 'dates of birth' or 'date of births' be correct? The answer is the first one, 'dates of birth.' Finally, one more thing about surname plurals. Some surnames exist with an 's' at the end of them, whereas the 's' is lacking in a spelling variation of the same surname. Michael and Michaels are such an example. To place an 's' at the end of the Michael surname to make a plural could mislead the reader. In such a case, I always reword the sentence to avoid using the plural of the name. Instead of saying, "There are 25 Michaels buried in that cemetery," I would say, "There are 25 people by the surname of Michael buried in that cemetery." Or, "There are 25 people by the surname of Michaels buried in that cemetery." The reader should not get confused about the meanings of those sentences. Cliff Lamere

Author: sectigress Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.columbia/2494.1.2.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi John, I am a relative of yours. My maternal grandfather was Sylvester Perry Johnson. He was the grandson of Sarah Maria Holmes (1819-1899). She was the daughter of Sylvester and Ann (Tripp) Holmes. Sylvester was the son of Jabez and Susanna. Jabez Jr. served in the Revolutionary War, 17th Regiment of Albany Couty Militia; in fact, Jabez Sr. and Experience (daughter of Edward Cleveland of Canterbury, Conn.) had 8 children: Sarar B., Experience, Palmer, Jabez, John, Jedediah, Roswell, and Lydia. Of the boys, only Palmer did not serve in the Revolutionary War. The longer part of this story begins with the Cooke's of England. Francis Cooke came to America in 1620 on the Mayflower. In 1623 Hester Cooke came to the New World. Other names associated with the Mayflower and, eventually, Holmes are: Allerton, Cushman, and Hopkins. I am interested in finding out more about the Johnson line. I know, only, that Sylvester Holmes had a daughter Sarah Maria (1819) who married William Chauncey Johnson. She had two children Albertus Brownwell and Sylvester Perry Johnson. These reports were obtained from Colonial Records of Holmes family (Prof. Adolphus H. Sage, 147 W. 62nd St., NY, NY: 1922, and "Old Family Bible" of Sylvester Holmes, Sr. in possession of W.F. Holmes, LeRoy, NY). Anything else you know and would share would be very cool.
