He told me that because of budget contstaints at that time, he would be unable to hire someone to do the job. And, due to the union contract he was unable to transfer someone from another job to do it. He jokingly asked if I wanted to volunteer to do it. When I first started writing my letters and asking other genealogists to write as well I had a scene from the movie Shawshank Redemption in mind where the main character, Andy Dufresne, decides to write to the state government for funds to create a new prison library. The warden told him they wouldn't do it but he decided to go for it and it eventually happened though it took over 6 years. With the wonderful bureaucracy of New York State I realize it would take an act of God or nature to get something like an online vital records index in a year. I have no delusions that this will happen any time soon but we must begin somewhere. I really don't think making the index available online would eliminate a source of revenue. You still need to write in and pay for a copy of the death certificate. The index only gives the name place and date. But regardless of the states current financial woes I think it would be worth our time to start now and maybe 5 or 10 years from now something would happen. Sometimes I think the gov't depends on our complacency towards the status quo. haha. Please write. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It would be wonderful if they were available online and searchable. However, considering the budget deficits facing the State of New York at the moment, I highly doubt they will take on an expensive project that would also eliminate a source of revenue. Several other states have done this and the index gives no more information than the SSDI already does. We've been paying 22 dollars per record for quite some time now and I think they've made enough to attempt a project like the digitization of the index. As always we can have more of an impact on our representatives with larger numbers so I would truly love it if my fellow NYS Genealogists wrote in to their representatives as well. As you said, it will be difficult to 'prove' who his father actually was unless I find a will, etc. Samuel's mother Elizabeth Hart, was the daughter of William & Elizabeth Hotaling Hart. They also had Rebecca and William Orin Hart. thank you for your reply. I am looking for a connection to my great great grandfather John Oscar Pitts b. 1836 in Ohio. Possibly his father is James Pitts who was also listed in the Ohio census. A marriage record for James shows his father's name was Joseph. I had received a clue that James was born in Columbia County New York to a father named Joesph. Going to the wills and testaments sections of ancestry.com, sure enough there it was under Joseph Pitts. I saw the Canadian connection and wondered because I have a Squires with Pitts DNA listed within 7 generations of a common ancestor. Her family was from the Newfoundland area around Bell Island. With the information you gave me, I don't think we are directly related, although I need to investigate the Pitts family in Columbia County New York more throughly.
