Loree, NY birth certificates began to be issued in 1881. Church records are the best source of birth information for 1834. An Episcopal church in Hudson was Christ Church which began about 1803. St. Mary's Catholic Church started in 1847, too late for you. You can contact Christ Church by using the following link to all Episcopal churches in Columbia County. http://www.albanyepiscopaldiocese.org/churches/columbia.html I could not find a website for the church. Would anyone have some advice for finding some proof of an ancestor's birth or baptism in Hudson, Columbia about 1834? I don't believe NY had records. It sounds like any Catholic church record keeping might not have begun until 1841. And I've not been able to find any history of an early Anglican church. My person is CHRISTIANA /CHRISTINA LANCASTER. She claimed her birth in Hudson about 1834. Her parents (James Lancaster and Mary Stock) had two children born first in Lancashire England before emigrating. In England, the family had marriages and baptisms in both the Roman Catholic and Anglican /or Church of England parishes. They might have used either in the USA. I think the family was only in Hudson for a short time, maybe arriving shortly before Christiana's birth. By 1840, the family had migrated to Taunton, Massachusetts. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Loree Muldowney

"Sex and the City: The Early Years" looks at the bawdy world the Dutch created when they settled in the Hudson Valley. Using art, literature and folklore of the era, the talk examines the libertine culture Europeans brought with them and how this culture fueled a rebellion of the common people against the rulers. This conflict, many historians argue, laid the foundation for the pluralistic, freedom-loving society that America became. In my novel The Mevrouw Who Saved Manhattan, I have painted a portrait of this world that De Halve Maen, Journal of the Holland Society, calls a "romp through the history of New Netherland that would surely have Petrus Stuyvesant complaining about the riot transpiring between its pages." The talk will be in the Huxley Theater on the first floor of the Cultural Education Center, home of the New York State Library, Museum and Archives, at 310 Madison Avenue, Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY. It will run from 12:15 to 1:15 on Friday, May 14th. The program is free and attendees are invited to bring lunch. He was born in Columbia County, NY. Possible parents are Humphrey Crary b: 1781 and Helena. Possible siblings include Peter b: 1807, Humphrey H b: 1815, and Alexander H b: 1809. Daughters are Marion E Hartell b: 1850, and Catherine Crary b: 1857, a possible son is Edmund C Crary b: Aug 1848. Possible grandson is Palmer Hartell Crary b: NYC 30 June 1877. There is a connection to the Crary line that married into the family of the steamboat inventor Robert Fulton. I'm trying to pin down the exact nature of that connection, whether direct or indirect. Responding to message 6: If Susan Eastwood Skala died in the 1940s, that is long enough ago for the death certificate to be available from the NYS Dept of Health. If she was born in 1878, she probably married about 1895-1900. You could get a better estimate by finding her in the 1930 census, which states the age at first marriage. When did Frank Skala die? If it was before 1960, it could be in the NYS Dept of Health vital records as well. If you'd like information on how to obtain these vital records documents, feel free to ask me. 1930 census has a Susan Skala, 51, a widow, living in Queens, New York. She has children Frank, 27, Roy, 22, and Agnes, 18. Too bad -- her age at first marriage is not stated. You say she died in the 1940s, so that's where the vital records index search would begin. Let's see what the 1920 census tells us. It tells us that Frank died before 1920. Here is Susan J. Skala, widowed, head of household, living in Chatham, Dist. 21, Columbia, N.Y. She is 41. In the household are Leon F. son 21 Martha C. dau 20 Charlotte J. dau 18 Frank son 16 Muriel L. dau 15 Leroy R. son 1 Roland son 10 Agnes S. dau 7 In 1910 in Patterson, Putnam Co., N.Y., Susan's husband Frank was still alive and they had been married for 13 years, about 1897.
