Posted on: Columbia County NY. Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Columbia/1639 Surname: Bates, Van Buren ------------------------- I am looking for any information on an Ann Marie Bates, born in 1835, daughter of Julia Ann. There's a great mystery about her because I cannot find any other information on her! The only other things that I know about her is that she married Morrison Brown Hurlbert from Cortland Co. sometime bet. 1860-1866. It is rumored in our family that she lived with Martin Van Buren's family in Kinderhook, Columbia Co., New York at one time, as she has been seen in a couple of family photos of the Van Buren's. Whether she was an actual extended family member or whatever, we do not know. Anybody having any information & would share it, would be extremely appreciated!!

I would highly recommend the little village of Cochem, especially if you're going in the off-season. (It's full of chartered coaches in the summer.) It's preserved to look as it did in about 1400. http://www.cochem.de/ http://members.aol.com/melefuji/Page9mosel.html Cheers, Ron Kyser -----Original Message----- From: Penny Pulver <penny@gandp-pulver.demon.co.uk> To: NYCOLUMB-L@rootsweb.com <NYCOLUMB-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, January 25, 2001 3:40 PM Subject: [NYCOL] Palatine Germans >My husband and I are planning to spend a bit of time on the East bank of the Rhine looking at the area where our Palatine German ancestors lived. I recommend Heidelburg too, the castle there has tours and it's a fun place to go. I think that's where we were allowed to go to the wine cellar and sample. What a beautiful old city. Kitty
My husband and I are planning to spend a bit of time on the East bank of the Rhine looking at the area where our Palatine German ancestors lived. Does anyone on the list have any ideas where we might visit? Penny Pulver in England.
I recommend Heidelburg. I visited there over 20 years ago, before I knew of my Palatine roots. However, it was a significant city of the Palatinate and was absolutely delightful to visit. Good beer, too. Hi Listers, I ran across this paragraph concerning public records for eastern New York records. It is from the book, "Columbia County, NY Gravestone Inscriptions" A Guide to understanding them, with a comprehensive family name index" by A. L. Divine, pub. 1991 by Kinship, Rhinebeck, NY "The early public records for the County are not located where they might be expected. Many of the probate and land deeds for the Manors and the western part of the County are located in the archives in the State Education Library at Albany. Since Columbia County was part of Albany County, these early records make no distinction between the two political entities. Residents living in the rural parts of Columbia County were referred to simply as being residents of Albany County. Most of the early records for the eastern settlements are now located in the County Courthouse at Pittsfield [MA]. A few of them can be found in the Courthouse at Bennington, Vermont. No distinction was made between the settlers in Columbia County and those of Massachusetts. Residents of Canaan were often referred to as being residents of Richmond; residents of Hillsdale, as residents of Great Barrington; and residents of Copake as being residents of Sheffield. Records for the eastern towns in the County can also be found in the archives of the three State's Capitals. It is also noteworthy that many of the early families that settled in the eastern part of Columbia County were recorded twice in the first federal census of the U. S. taken in 1785-92, once in Massachusetts, and again in New York State. The only records of its own history remaining in Columbia County today, are the records engraved on the gravestones in its numerous old community and church cemeteries, and private family burying grounds." Just a tidbit of info for you all! :) Susan

Hi Anne, Yes, Germantown was known as East Camp when the Palatines settled in New York and there was also a "West Camp" on the other side of the Hudson River. Germantown was part of the Livingston Manor. In 1710 Queen Anne purchased back from Robert and Alida Livingston six thousand acres for the purpose of securing a place of settlement for the German Palatines who had fled to England to avoid religious persecution. It is still called Germantown. The church is "The Reformed Church of Germantown" and was organized in 1728 or 1729 by Rev. Johannes Van Driessen, the first pastor. I have the book "Baptism Record of Reformed Church, Germantown, New York 1729-1893 by Arthur C. M. Kelly, published by Kinship, Rhinebeck, New York (1969). If you would like a lookup, please let me know.
