Dear Columbia Co Researchers ~ I am looking for ties to the Joseph LAW family. He was b. 1752 in Goshen, CT and sometime before 1785 he migrated to Canaan, Columbia Co., with his wife Dulana FELLOWS. Their 5th child, Laura LAW married my gggg grandfather William BROWN. I have not been able to connect William to any Brown family, but I know that he too came from Columbia Co., before settling in Richfield Springs, Otsego Co., NY with his wife Laura Law by abt 1815 or so. I recently found from a cemetery lookup that Laura's former name was Law. That in turn, has lead me to an ancestral file in the LDS on the LAWS going back to the original immigrant ancestor Andrew Law in MA from Scotland. I was thrilled to get this, as this was the only thing I have ever even found to tie anything on William BROWN in the few years I have looked for him. Of course one can not trust the LDS records to be entirely accurate, but I must say it's a start as to where this LAW family came from and something about William Brown. He no doubt lived in Canaan or New Lebanon, Columbia Co. Joseph's parent's were Samuel law and Mary Langrell of Litchfield and New London, CT... Do these people belong to anyone's BROWN or LAW family? Thanks for any replies, Penny Kresl kresl@elknet.net Delavan, Wisconsin USA http://www.elknet.net/kresl/Penny/penny.html

Hello Listers, I have recently found new information in my search for John SMITH b. 1769. His father was Jehiel SMITH, b. 3 Jun 1745 in Greenfield, CT son of Daniel and Sarah (PRICE) SMITH; m. Pene DAVIS, 1768. Daniel was known to be in Dutchess Co. NY in 1757 and I think it's possible that Jehiel moved on to Colombia Co. Jehiel purchased property in Hancock, MA from Eleaser DEMING of New Lebanon, Columbia Co. NY in 1785. Eventually, Jehiel sold that property to his son John and moved on to Fairfield, Chittenden Co. (now Franklin Co.) VT and by 1796 he moved into the Province of Quebec, Canada. I would be delighted to hear from anyone who may have connections to this family. As always I am quite happy to share information and sources. Margaret in NV
Federal censuses are private for 72 years; the 1930 census is scheduled for release in 2002. There never was a restriction on State Censuses that I've heard of. I believe that the census was taken in all counties extant in the census year, but all the State copies were lost in the 1911 Capitol fire and some of the County copies were just plain lost. One town that I know of has its copy of an early census that does not exist for the whole county. There may be others. All the original 1915 and 1925 copies exist and are in the custody of the NYS Archives. Marie
Sarah, NY took a census every ten years from 1825-1875. They skipped 1885, then did a skimpy one in 1892 that missed many counties (including Columbia) and omitted large portions of the counties that were included. They resumed in 1905 and took censuses for 1915 and 1925. Later censuses are kept secret for about 75 years, I believe. There were some colonial censuses done for particular Towns or cities. Try these two links from my website. They are to general information about NY censuses. http://home.eznet.net/~halsey/NY/ny-census.htm http://www.nygbs.org/info/articles/NYS_census_contents.html Or, visit my website to look at the 64 links to online NY census results. I would like to find the obituaries for my great-great-grandparents. Peter O'Hara died in Copake Falls, NY on December 31, 1915. His wife, Sarah McCormick O'Hara died in Copake Falls, NY on January 20, 1905. Can somebody tell me what newspaper(s) I should be looking in for their obituaries? I am hoping that these papers would be on microfilm and available through interlibrary loan from the state library in Albany. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Mary Theresa McCombe Yonkers, NY
I am researching the family of Peter O'Hara and his wife Sarah McCormick. The 1870 census shows the newlyweds as living next door to the family of James and Elizabeth McCormick and their children - twins William and Belle age 23, Alice age 5, Elizabeth age 3 and Mary A. age 2 months. I'm suspecting that Sarah McCormick is also James and Elizabeth's daughter and that Peter O'Hara met Sarah through her William who "works in the Ore Bed" just as Peter O'Hara did. If anyone knows anything about these families, would you please contact me. I am Peter and Sarah's great-great-granddaughter. Mary Theresa McCombe Yonkers, NY

PHILLIPS, William M., was born in the town of West Monroe in 1856, a son of Elijah H., who is also a native of West Monroe, born in 1828, and a son of Peter, a native of Kinderhook, Columbia county, whose father was Jacob, who came to West Monroe in 1819. Elijah, while young followed boating on the canal and later has devoted his time to farming. He has been a resident of the town of Constantia since 1864, and has always taken a active interest in politics. His wife was Emeline MILTON, a native of New Hampshire. The result of this marriage was six children, the names of those surviving being William M., Mrs. Olivia M. GOODWIN of Hastings, Eliza J. and Wendell E. The subject began for himself when twenty-three by purchasing a farm. In 1880 he married Emily, daughter of William MERCHANT of West Monroe. In 1884 they removed to their present farm of forty acres in the southwest corner of the town, where they have a pleasant home in view of Oneida Lake, with five children, namely, Leon E., Leola A., Lester L., Lyle A. and Leland E.

Posted on: Columbia County NY. Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Columbia/11713 Surname: Van Buren, VanDenburgh, Rector, Witbeck, Brooks ------------------------- I thank you for you help, but that peter is taken. This info comes to me from Kari Skousen, an angel and a genious. Peter Witbeck born 1789 who married Engeltje/Anna Staats, was the son of Andries Witbeck and Dirkje Vosburgh. Peter and Anna's kids were John P., Alida, Andries, Cornelius Van Alen, Dorcas Ann, Maria and Dolly/Dorothy, but no Christina. Thank you Kari. I already have my Hannah Van Buren, daughter of Henry Van Buren and Hilletje Shutter. I hope that my Henry is son of Peter Van Buren and brother of AbrahamVB, or I am going to have to start over. My Vandenburgh, Van Buren, Rector and Witbecks are mixed together a lot, and yet I still cannot pinpoint my Witbeck, who may have been born in 1791 OR 1797, depending on whose transcription you read. I am going to Castleton this summer to work on this mystery. My Peter Witbeck named his sons William first, then Andrew, and his daughter may or may not have been Christina. His wife Dorothy's mother was Christina Pulver, so it stands to reason that her first daughter would be Christina also, and though I can find evidence of their other children, there is no record of Christina's baptism like there are the others, and she was born a good five to seven years before her alleged siblings, so I have to wonder if she's really theirs at all. I only say that she was because others have told me so. Her birthdate is in question, her death date is anecdotal, and her grave is AWOL. Can you maybe tell me how, if My Henry Van Buren and Abraham Van Buren were really sons of Peter,( and there is a will that lists two sons of that name), how are these VB's related to the prez? All my life I was told that we were related to him, but then almost all VB's in the capital district were!! Thanks for your time,, aloha Eve
