    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. Susan, Here are the names of some Curries buried in Columbia Co. They were taken from the Columbia Co. Master Burial Index on my website. One is named George. Three have the same names as George's sons. Two were buried in Claverack and the other (George) in Mellenville. These two places are next to each other and a little east of Hudson. All 12 Curries were buried in one of these two locations. You can tell by the book and page numbers below. It might be that these are relatives, or it could even be the children of George, plus their wives and children. You can get photocopies of these pages from the Columbia County Historical Society by following the directions. Currie Alexander Bk 14:14 Currie Catharine Bk 14:26 Currie Charles Bk 14:14 Currie Cornelia Bk 14:26 Currie Edward Bk 14:14 Currie Elizabeth Bk 14:14 Currie Elizabeth Bk 34:83 Currie George Bk 34:82,83 Currie James Bk 14:24,26 Currie Sarah Bk 14:24 Currie Simeon Bk 14:26 Currie Stephan Bk 14:26,24 These next names have a different spelling and are buried in other locations. The two Marys are the same person, but published twice. Curry Kenneth Bk 6:122 Curry Mary E. Bk 13:9 Curry Mary E. Bk 18:9 http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ Go to Vital Records-Deaths to find the Index which is used in conjunction with the link just below it. That link will get you to the names of the cemeteries for each book and page number, and that is where your directions for getting photocopies can be found. 1. [NYCOL] Where to turn next
    2. Greetings all. My ggg grandmother was named Esther Dickinson (or various spelling) and was born in Canaan, Columbia County in 1774. She married Rufus Bentley in about 1794. I have written to the state, county, and town seeking her birth record in order to identify her parents. No one has any information on her, not even the town historian. She says there are no town records prior to 1878. Do any of you know of a way to trace ancestors born in Columbia County in the 1700s? Thanks, Judy Drake Phoenix, AZ

    1. [NYCOL] FW: 1820 Columbia census
    2. Sharon Moore
    3. Has anyone ever heard of the existence of another version of the 1820 census for Columbia? The microfilmed version at the National Archives is in more or less alphabetical order, meaning the enumerator transcribed the info from someplace. Does the original exist someplace? The reason I ask is because I have run across a reference to a Debbe Francis Dutcher and a Henry Dutcher in the 1820 census for Claverack. The reference has hash marks in the right number of columns. But I can't find them there. I can't find them any time or anywhere. I know to not trust this kind of reference without checking out the source, but there is nothing at all close to what this reference cites. Was it made up completely? How else to explain the missing data. That, or there is another version of the census for Columbia. Any help anyone can give me to figure out this puzzle would be appreciated. thanks, Sharon

    1. Re: [NYCOL] Hoags Corners
    2. Hoag is a familiar name in Nassau, Rensselaer County, one of the original settlers was Jonathan Hoag, who purchased several hundred acres from Stephen Van Rensselaer and settled there in 1792. He constructed Hoag's pond by building a dam and he is described as "perhaps the most industrious and progressive of the pioneers of Nassau." (Anderson's Landmarks of Rensselaer County)

    3. Posted on: Columbia County NY. Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Columbia/11758 Surname: Miller, Teal ------------------------- I am tracing a line of Millers from Columbia and Rennselaer Counties. This is what I have so far Stephen H. Miller b. Nov-1858, possibly in Stephentown, NY. Married an unknown woman whose maiden name was probably Sykes, and had Frances, John, Addie, George, and Eva. His wife passed away, and he brought in help to raise the children. One child is listed living in the village of Nassau, under the Sykes household and it indicates this was her grandmother. Stephen married his help, Lena Teal (more on her if you search "Teal" on this message board). They married Aug-21-1895 in Brainard, NY, and lived on a farm in the town of Nassau, near Brainard. They had one son together, Eugene Luther, b. Feb-19-1895. Stephen, it is said, died when his horse and carriage was hit by a car in Malden Bridge, NY, in 1921. He's buried in the family plot in East Nassau Cemetary, in Stephentown. Lena stayed on the farm with her son Eugene, who married and had my grandmother. Anyone who knows any more about Stephen's roots, please write to me! turtle@turtlesweb.com Thanks

I grew up near both, on the border of Columbia Co & Rennselaer Co (Brainard area) - so I imagined both families were somehow prominent in the local history to have a town and a mountain named after them! Legend has it that my dad dragged my mother, fresh outta suburban NJ, up to the top of Curtis Mountain to propose to her. Not that it matters to your history research, of course!
