I have been trying to sort this family out for several years now. Thanks, Tim Masloski Sunderland, MA
John, You may find a problem in looking for land deeds in Copake for the years you are interested in. The title in fee in Copake was held by the Livingston Family of Livingston Manor, of which Copake was a part of. The residents held the land under leases from the Livingstons. You might want to put another message on the list with the names you are looking for. There are Road District lists of the early 1800s for Livingston which included the Copake area, that might have something in them. Land deeds would be kept by the county clerk's office at the capital of any county in NY. For Columbia Co., that would be at Hudson. For further information, see my Guide to Albany Area Genealogical Resources. It is listed under Research Sites on my website. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ Cliff John Bedard wrote: > > Hello list, > > anyone out there know where I can find the old (late 17 early 1800's) land > records for Copake? The baptism, marriage, and member records were published in the first 3 issues of "The Columbia" magazine from Kinship but they don't start until 1792. See their index: http://www.kinshipny.com/directory.htm Scan down until you find "The Columbia" and then "Town of Austerlitz" shortly after that or just search on "Austerlitz". -----Original Message----- From: Dorrie Traficante [mailto:ferrett99@prodigy.net] Sent: Monday, May 07, 2001 2:11 PM To: NYCOLUMB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYCOL] Church records Posted on: Columbia County NY. Posted on: Columbia County NY. Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/NY/Columbia/11839 Surname: VAN HOESEN, SHARP, SMITH, BABIN, BAYLES ------------------------- This old letter written on parchment paper was just recently found by a family member. It describes the Garrett van Hoesen Sharp family of Columbia co., New York. It was written by his daughter May Sharp born about 1868 to her nephew Russell Sharp born in 1908. We believe the letter was written around 1918, can anyone make a connection with this family? "For Russell Sharp, my nephew: History of Garrett Van Hosen Sharp. My father Garrett v.h. Sharp was born in Kinderhook on the Hudson River July 10, 1818. His grandfather came here from Holland, he was one of the oldest colonist to settle along the Mohawk Valley. His parents came to Kinderhook where they had a farm adjoining the farm of Martin van Buren who was one of our Presidents of the USA. They had a large family; 4 boys and 4 girls...Garrett was the youngest boy. His father John Sharp owned a ferry across the Hudson to a place called Fishkill Landing. The farmhouse was built of Cobblestone. His father sold the farm and built a hotel also made of Cobblestone in Kinderhook where the family lived for many years. I have been there with my father when I was a little girl and saw the hotel and ferry houses and the cemetery where his parents were buried. After his parents died a older brother sold the ferry line to the government which he had no right to do until the younger children were of age. My father had a older sister living in Newburg, New York who was married. My father took care of his youngest sister who was the same age as you are now and lived with his older sister and family in Newburg and worked in a factory and sent his little sister to school and paid for their board. He was 15 years old and that younger sister was always the best loved aunt. His sister married a fine man who owned a very fine farm in Wolcott, New York. My father married my mother in Newburg. She was a very fine women who was a teacher and who wrote poetry and stories for magazines. She wrote short stories for a paper called the Saturday Night published once a week, now known to us as the Saturday Evening Post. She died when I was a small baby, only a few days old....you know my sister Lottie, your Aunt Lottie, she was like a mother to me, always, and I never missed my real mother. I had 4 brothers and two sisters, George was 25 years old and Maggie was 20 years old when I was born. There was John, Harry and Will, Lottie and Maggie who I scarcely remember. I must of been about 4 yers old when she died in Wapperingers Falls, New York. Then we moved to Wolcott where my father's two sisters and one brother lived. I was about 15 years old when your father came to visit us in Wolcott. Then we moved to good old Chicago and I guess you and Lillian known the rest of the History of the Sharp family from then on. You were a darling little boy. Aunty May, (to) my favorite nephew."

Posted on: Columbia County NY. Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Columbia/11837 Surname: Averill, Kelsey ------------------------- I have been searching for the parents of Sarah Averill who married Stephen Kelsey, probably in Alford, Berkshire Co., MA on 13 Apr 1773. The family is well documented in Alford Sarah's father may have been Ichabod Averill who was one of the early proprietors of land near Taconic Mountain in Columbia County close to the Massachusetts border. The 1790 NY census for Columbia Co. shows an Isaac Averile living in Caanan Twp, but there are only two males under 16 and 1 female noted. Does anyone have any information on this family?
There are two simple steps you can take to protect yourself against viruses. I have never seen them discussed on any mail list, or elsewhere. One is to set your antivirus program to check incoming email attachments. You thought yours did it automatically? Well think again. Norton Antivirus 2000 on Dell computers does not. You have to choose the option yourself. If you don't, the viruses are welcomed by your computer. What must Norton be thinking of? Why do they think we buy their antivirus? Don't they know that most of us receive our viruses from email attachments? Dell doesn't help out either. They just let it stay the way they get it, and then blame Norton. It took me many months to find the option on my own, but only after wrestling many times with virurses. I wrote a webpage today that gives specific directions for choosing this option. I also wrote about an email from which I received a virus even though it had NO visible attachment (the only one I ever received like it). And I give a possible second method of preventing many viruses (probably including the email without the attachment). The method was advised by a very knowledgeable friend who for many years has been in charge of computers and software for a large organization. I give specific instructions on how to choose this option with Netscape and Internet Explorer. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/Aid/AID-VirusProtect.htm My apologies to those people who do not like to see virus warnings, etc. on a genealogy mail list. However, I could not remain silent any longer about something that I know that many of you can do to quickly protect yourself from incoming viruses. I keep hearing about the need to be cautious about opening attachments. But, I have never heard that your antivirus should protect you even if you did open one that contained a virus. Well, it is supposed to, but we have not been told that before. And most of don't know that we have to make a conscious choice to have an antivirus protect us against viruses in email attachments, because it won't do it otherwise. I don't want to start a discussion of this subject on the mail list. If you have comments, you may want to direct them to me privately. If you have questions, I'm sorry, but I know very little about viruses and I don't know anything about software that isn't mentioned on my webpage. I'm trying to help, but I'm no expert. Cliff
Seeking information on Josiah RUSSELL married to Joanna SPAULDING d. 1820 , 1823 in Austerlitz. Josiah's father was Joseph Spaulding from LItchfield Co CT. Josiah in Revolution from CT. No information on Joanna's parents. Gloria Gibbel
Dear Joanne, In your message of May 5th you refer to a 1780 marriage in "Livingston Co.". Did you mean the then District of Livingston Manor in what became Columbia County rather than Livingston County which was formed years later in western New York? In any event, the Revolutionary War pension application of a possible brother of your Jacob, a James Decker, might be of interest. He says that he was born on Oct. 24, 1758 in the part of Columbia County that became the town of Copake (Then a part of Livingston Manor. He believes that a record of his birth was in the Lutheran Church at Churchtown in Columbia County (Livingston Manor). He says that during the Revolutionary War he resided with his Grandfather, (first name looks like Jacob) Decker, in Clermont (then also Livingston Manor). He further says that in May 1777 he with his brother Jacobus Decker enlisted for three years and marched to Fishkill and Stony Point, where he became ill. The name Jacob Decker in Fernow's "New York in the Revolution" in the section "Roster of State of State Troops" Militia & Levies which were long service militia regiments as: Sergeant in Col. Dubois' Regiment of Levies and as a Sergeant in the 10th Albany Militia Regiment of Livingston Manor. Fernow also shows a Private Jacob C. Decker in the 10th Albany Militia Regiment of Livingston Manor. Robert's "New York in the Revolution as Colony and State" shows a Jacob Decker & a Jacob Decker in the 10th Albany Militia Regiment. Robert's work also shows a Jacob L. Decker in a Land Bounty list for this Regiment. I will dig a little more to see if there is anything more. Don
