The URL (address) that I sent out earlier this morning is valid. I just learned that RootsWeb's "freepages" section is down for part of today for maintenance and upgrading. They need to install more hard drive space. The maintenance will continue over the next few days, but the message I received did not say whether that would cause further outages or not. I suspect it will. Other RootsWeb sections are working fine. However, if you try to access a URL beginning with "freepages", you can expect problems part of today and perhaps for the next few days. I just picked the wrong morning to post the update of my Guide. I have been receiving mail asking me to check the URL, which is why I am sending this message to the list. Freepages makes it possible for me and many other people to have a personal website on RootsWeb. It is a wonderful service, but has become so popular that they have run out of computer hard drive space. The current problem is just a small glitch due to popularity. Things will be back to normal soon. In the meantime, be patient. Cliff
The 2001 revision of my Guide to Albany Area Genealogical Resources includes updated information for 28 facilities in the NY counties of Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Greene, Schenectady and Montgomery. I have added email addresses for those places that had them. Compared with the 2000 version, renovations have begun at some locations and affect the hours of operation. Some are closed for a couple of weeks this summer. One is closed for about 2 months. One moved to a new address and changed its phone number at the same time. If you plan to visit Albany or the counties mentioned above, you would benefit from taking a look at the Guide. Feel free to run off a copy to take along on your trip. Printing instructions for Netscape users (something similar might work in Internet Explorer): Click on File, then Save As. Give it a name such as Guide, but change the extension from .htm to .doc which will allow you to open it in Word. Notice the directory in which you are saving it. Open Word and find that directory. Open the file and it should look pretty good (at least mine did). It took up 16 pages of text. You may find a better way of doing it. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/Guide.htm Cliff
Jim, do you have excess to records in Germantown?? I am trying to find out if my family came from there. I really need some help with this family, it has been a mystery to me for ever. I am looking for a George Howell and possible wife Emma. 1880's late, like 1887-1889
Nan, In looking for a possible relation of your Hart (Hardt, Herdt) and our Harders (Herder, Harter), I looked at the baptism records of the family of William and Hannah: Germantown Reformed Church #4331 Child: Jacob, Bp. 01 Dec 1808, B. 18 Oct 1808 Parents: William Herdt jr, Annatjen Schermenhoren Sponsor: Jacob Schiffer, single; Catharina Butzer, single Germantown Reformed Church #4439 Child: Elisa Anna, Bp. 19 Dec 1810, B. 14 Nov 1810 Parents: Wilhelm Herdt jr, Anna Schermenhoren Sponsor: William Herdt; Elisabeth Hochdehl Germantown Reformed Church #4597 Child: Pieter, Bp. 26 Apr 1813, B. 15 Mar 1813 Parents: William Herdt, Anna Schermenhoren Sponsor: Peter Rockefeller; Becki Herdt Germantown Reformed Church #4734 Child: Lena Malandy, Bp. 23 Jul 1815, B. 22 Jun 1815 Parents: William Hardt, Annatjen Schermenhoren Sponsor: John Heermanns; Lena Schiffer Germantown Reformed Church #4857 Child: Anson, Bp. 03 Aug 1817, B. 22 Jun 1817 Parents: William Hardt jr, Hanna Schermenhoren Sponsor: Philipp P. Clum; Maria Hyser Germantown Reformed Church #5013 Child: William Henrich, Bp. 26 Dec 1819, B. 02 Sep 1819 Parents: William Hardt jr, Anna Schermenhoren Sponsor: Henrich Schiffer; Bettzi Jacoby Germantown Reformed Church #5157 Child: John, Bp. 16 Jun 1822, B. 28 Feb 1822 Parents: William Hardt, Hanna Schermenhoren Sponsor: John Miller; Kitti Blass There is no connection with our Harders, who were numerous in the area, but there is a Schermerhorn/Schiffer relationship that is supported also by this record: Linlithgo Reformed Church #: 1971 Child: Annatjen, Bp. 11 Apr 1790, B. 10 Feb 1790 Mother: Lena Shever, unmarried Sponsor: Casparus Schermerhorn; Naatje Shever Although your Hannah could be the "fatherless" Annatjen (assuming she was taken in by the Schermerhorns), a stronger candidate is: Linlithgo Reformed Church #2175 Child: Anna, Bp. 15 Dec 1794, B. 23 Apr 1794 Parents: Casparus Schermerhorn, Anna Sheffer Sponsor: John Sheffer; Anna Snyder The sponsors of Anna would be her grandparents, the parents of Anna Sheffer and her wayward sister Lena: Germantown Reformed Church #1176 Child: Anna, Bp. 16 Oct 1768 Parents: Johannes Schiefer, Anna Schneider Sponsor: Samuel Schneider; Anna Schiefer Germantown Reformed Church #1234 Child: Lena, Bp. 10 Jun 1770 Parents: Johannes Schiefer jr, Anna Schneider Sponsor: Samuel Muller & wife Lena Platner A possible baptism of Casparus: Linlithgo Reformed Church #1007 Child: Casparus, Bp. 29 Jun 1766 Parents: Teunis Schermerhoorn, Hendrikje Konyn Sponsor: Casparus Konyn; Dorothea Fryenmoet [All from A.C. Kelly: Baptism Record Linlithgo Reformed Church 1722-1889 and Baptism Record of Reformed Church, Germantown, New York 1729-1898] You should be aware that both Schermerhorn and Sheffer (Schaffer) were very common names in this area. Jacob Janse Schermerhorn (1622 - 1689), my ancestor also, was in Albany before 1648 and had hundreds if not thousands of descendents by this time. H.Z. Jones' Palatine Families 1710 records 12 Schaffer families in the settlements at Germantown and across the river. Some of these moved early on, but I'm sure others came from Germany after that. Good luck, Jim Harder

Good Evening : I'm making an inquiry about a Hugh McNeill who appeared in the 1830 & 1840 Federal Census. At that time he and his wife Mary Silvernail and five childern were residing in the Town of Taghkanic. All their children were born and bap. in the Town of Copake which at one time was part of Taghkanic. The eldest was born in 1823 and the youngest in 1830. At this time I havn't checked the Federal or State Census index's for the name Hugh McNeill. Does anyone have any information on Hugh McNeill himself ? Sincerely Steve Wilder

Hi Susan and others who were so quik and helpful on my inquiry. Please let me focus and amplify- the name may be spelled as it was when the family landed near Boston in 1637 or when they founded Leicester, Ma, That was Kerley. It is also spelled later as Carlee or Carle or several others. Some of then were in Fairfield Ct and then up in NW Conn. and then in the Oblong and some went to Vt. In the 1800s many of the branches went up the Mohawk and some went into the Finger Lakes-others went to Watertown. Because my ggggrandfather was James and was born about 1796, and because he was later,1813or14, to marry Chestina Treman d/o Jared Treman of Hillsdale, we are looking hard at Columbia County. Because he died in 1818 with no record as far as we have searched, and because Chestina Treman Carley is only proved, aside from our family tradition, by mention in her fathers will, we are looking hard at different spellings and places. There were a lot of Carleys in the Oblong, I need a ! James of some spelling and born near 1796. Tks Bob
Hi Bob: I could find no Carleys in the book "Baptism Record Reformed Church West Copake, N.Y. 1783-1899" by Arthur C. M. Kelly, Kinship, Rhinebeck, NY 1969 but I did find a family with the name of Cearl/Carl/Kerl/Karl. Page 19, # 408 4.18.1790 James Cearl and Marytje Roady bpt Thomas (b 2.23), sponsors: Thomas Kearl and Nelly Kearl Page 19, #409 4.18.1790 James Cearl and Marytje Roady bpt Peter (b (2.23), sponsors: Peter Raady and Elsje Plaas Page 26, #554 7.8.1792 James Cearl and Maytje Rhody bpt Johannes (b 6.3), sponsors: Johannes Rhody and Sarah Lommis Page 40, #872 1.29.1797 James Carl and Maritje Rode bpt James (b 1.10), sponsors: Jacob Blass and Anna Finger Page 53, 1149 4.20.1800 James Kerl and Maritje Rode bpt Christina (b 1.13), sponsors: Hendrick Neffer and Christina Rees Page 62, #1387 6.13.1802 James Karl and Maritje Rode bpt Abraham (b 6.7), sponsors: Abraham Decker and Peggy Karl James Carl and Mary Rody were married 11.7.1780 both were from Livingston Manor, From the book "Marriage Record of Linlithgo Reformed Church, Livingston, NY 1720-1899 by Arthur C.M. Just to let you know the church burned down twice so there are very few records remaining. I do hope this the the Carley family you are looking for. Hope this helps. Mike, In the book Ameican Ancestry there is a listing for : Hotaling,Ambrose of Philmont,b.1837 (m. Libbie Hendrick) and William H. of Philmont;sons of Thomas Hotaling of Philmont,b.1812 (m.1834 Caroline Coon of Taghanick);son of Henry P. of Taghanick,b. 1774,d.1852 (m. Susie Spade). Maybe this will help and maybe it will just confuse! Bonnie Mike Hotaling wrote: > Posted on: Columbia County NY. I think your James is the James Carl (b.1797) I've found listed as a son of James Carl (b.abt.1758) and Mary Rody (b.1761) who were married Nov.7, 1780, at Linlithgo Reformed Church in what later became Columbia Co. James (b.abt.1758) was a son of Thomas Carl and Catherine Duytser (b.1735, d.bef.1785) who were married May 20, 1756. According to info from http://www.clampett.net/centre/genealogy/index_genealogy.htm although James' (b.abt.1758) and Mary's eldest child was born in Linlithgo, NY, the only other chikl whose birthplace is listed was born in W.Copake. The descendants of Thomas Carl were fairly flexible in their spelling of the last name with close relatives buried in Union Cemetery, Ancram (near W.Copake) using Carl & Carle equally often on markers. I am searching for info regarding my great-grandfather, Samuel John RUSSELL and his brother, Hugh RUSSELL. Samuel was born in Ireland (where?) in 1822 and Hugh in Ireland (where?) in 1824. Samuel married Sabina Flanigan on 15 Dec 1849 at Christs Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ghent. Samuel had immigrated in 1844. He and Hugh were both farmers in Ghent. Samuel and Sabina's children were Eleanor, John Samuel and Isabelle Catherine. Hugh married Jane ? and their children were Robert, William, Mary Jane, James, John, Elenor, Hugh, Samuel and Florence. Samuel and Sabina were buried in the Ghent Union Cemetery. I would be delighted if I could share information regarding this family.
