I have two handwritten letters, one dated Sep 7, 1906 and the other is dated October 8, 1906. Both are signed Mrs. John H. Cole and the 'return' address is Box 60, Valatie, Col Co, N.Y. The first letter states "Before I was married was Elizabeth Dennis..." I know from what family research that I have done, she was the mother of Kate Elizabeth (Aby), born 13 June 1852 in Kinderhook, NY. This is from the death certificate of Kate Elizabeth which also states that her FOSTER father is Ernest Greissler. The letter also asks "How is Katy & Uncle Ernest...." She also says "one year ago last first day of May I lost my Husband..........I lost my husband & my Father & my Gradddaughter all less than onr year" - This would possibly indicate that John H. Cole died May 1, 1905. In the second letter, she talks about her brothers and sisters: "John is out west someshere.........Ike lives here in Chatham, Ira lives in Chatham Center & Frank the youngest is dead. Anna lives in Chatham & keeps boardinghouse. She is an old maid. Seena the youngest girl lives out east in Wooster." I would appreciate any information on Elizabeth (Dennis) Cole and family.

I wonder if he could have been the father of Sarah Barnes who married Joel Warner? Their daughter Sarah Warner was b. Cannan early 1800s. Any chance there's a match? Is this the Joel Barnes who was the son of Joseph Barnes of New Braintree, MA? Please let me know if you think there are any possibilities. I have been researching my Barnes line for a very long time. Thanks for any help. Irene
Nathan, On my website there is a list of 60,000 names of people buried in Columbia Co. Also there is a list of 359 cemeteries to be used in conjunction with the names. See Vital Records-Deaths, then Columbia Co. There is a Martin Krum listed as buried at the Dunavin Residence as you stated. Using the cemetery list, you will find instructions as to how to get a photocopy of the page on which the record was published. Columbia Co. Historical Society has the book. Sometimes directions were given so that you would at least be in the vicinity. I didn't have room in the database to copy the directions which were sometimes extensive. Also, some route numbers have changed, and very often the property is no longer owned by the same family (most of the gravestones were transcribed in the 1930s) so it didn't seem like terribly useful information except for someone like yourself. As an alternate solution, I made arrangements with CCHS so that you can get the information easily and cheaply if you want it. CCHS might be able to tell you more about its location after they read any directions given. Since the stone was read as recently as 1969, there is a good chance that it is still there. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ Good luck. I was wondering if anyone could help me locate the present day location of some ancestors grave stones. In The Columbia. v1(2) 1985, it states that Martin Krum is buried at the Dunarin (Dunavin) residence, Chatham Center. He was buried in 1801 so I'm curious if there is still some type of marker at his resting place. Does anyone happen to know if the Dunarin residence still exists or how I could find out who the present day owner is? I'm planning a trip back to NY from my home in California and I would like to visit the site if possible. Thank you. Nathan
Hi Ginny, I too find the Gateway heading a nuisance. However, I think perhaps we should give the situation a serious look before completely eliminating them. They frequently provide a trigger for serious discussion regarding some family lines and I think few would bother scanning "the query board." While scrolling down to get to the body of the message is admittedly a nuisance, we may be sacrificing more by eliminating them. Whatever you do will be fine with me. While I've got your attention, I'd like to thank you for hosting the list. We don't often recognize your contribution and when we do it is usually because of some perceived problem. Your efforts on our behalf are truly appreciated. Warmest regards, Jim Groat jgroat1@midsouth.rr.com

Hi all, I have little control over the format, etc. of the query board messages and the way they are "gatewayed", especially since they've been revamped by ancestry/rootsweb. However, if they are not helpful to people, and are annoying, then I can stop the "gatewaying" (geez, whatever happened to English?). I know several people are unhappy with these messages popping up on the list. Are there any of you who have a problem with searching the query boards occasionally, as opposed to receiving the gatewayed messages on the mailing list? Please send responses directly to me - lemrof@taconic.net - so that we don't overwhelm the mailing list with this discussion. Thanks. Ginny Formel listowner, nycolumb-l@rootsweb.com

Joanne, I couldn't agree with you more. The "gatewayed messages" are making me so nuts, I have thought of unsubscribing but I really like this list. I did write to Ginny Formel and discussed my displeasure with her-----at the very least they are often reduntant, and how often to I need to read something like, "Sorry I don't have that name" or "Thank you for the information". I think if a number of us complained to Ginny, she might be persuaded to take us off this "Gateway" thingy. Or at least take a vote. It's worth a try. Margaret ps. Ginny is really a very nice lady. I remember she took this list in self defense she said, <G>. M
