Johann Friederich Reiss in that year in St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Churchtown, Columbia Co. The sponsors were Abraham Esselstein and Margaretha Weis. This is from the book "Baptism Record of St. Thomas Lutheran Church Churchtown, Columbia County, New York (Lutheran Church of Claverack) 1760-1899 transcribed by Arthur C.M. Kelly, Kinship, Rhinebeck, NY 1969, page 15, No. 324. The actual citation is: "Johannes Esselstein and Catharina bpt Abrahaa [probably a typo] b 7.13. Also Hillsdale was once known as Nobletown. The records for the Hillsdale church begin in the year 1776. From the book "Baptismal Records of Reformed Dutch Church Hillsdale, New York (Krum Church) (Dutch Church of New Claverack) 1776-1849 by Arthur C.M. Kelly, Kinship, Rhinebeck, NY 1970, page 1, No. 13 4.1.1777 Johannes Esselsteyn and Catharina Esselsteyn bpt Isak, sponsors: Andries Cool and Christina Cool. No other baptisms for Johannes and Catharina in either book. By the way Ysselstein is a town in the Netherlands and some times the name was cited as van Esselstein and various other spellings. Hope this helps, Susan

Arthur C. M. Kelly has transcribed many of the baptismal records of that area. You might be able to find them in a library. His catalog is at http://www.kinshipny.com/catalog.htm#COLUMBIA In that era you should look for spellings like Esselsteyn, Ysselsteyn or some variant.

    3. Margaret Taylor transcribed an uncopyrighted 1952 genealogy of the Cronkhite family in Eastern NY and New England. It had been a manuscript at the NYS Library. She indexed it and then returned the improved copy to the library. I have just posted the genealogy and index. It is a large file, but I couldn't get it smaller without breaking it into pieces. I didn't think that most users would prefer that. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/Misc/Cronkhite-Gen.htm Cliff

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VRB.2ACE/1809.1.1 Message Board Post: The connection I am attempting to make is still somewhat speculative at this point regarding Sally Cross and Eldad Balckney. The information was posted at the Cattaraugus Co NY site when I searched the surname CROSS. Sally appeared married to Eldad. The notation says his father Charles was an early settler to the area. It also mentioned Lewis P Blackney as b 30 May 1811 in New Lebanon NY. The names of children strike a familiar chord: thier eldest named for his father, the next three Nathan, Lewis P and Asa are names in my family at that time period and I "suspect" there may be a connection. Sorry that I can't provide more info on Blackneys at this point but will keep you posted if anything should arise.

Surnames: BLACKNEY, MUMFORD, LEMONS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VRB.2ACE/1809.1 Message Board Post: This is a very collateral line of mine, but thought that we might be able to assist one another. In my records I have a Clarissa Blackney born July 14, 1814 in Columbia County, New York. I know that she had at least two brothers who fought in the Civil War and a grandfather who was a Revolutionary War Veteran. My Clarissa Blackney married Charles Norhood Mumford in 1836 at Ladi, New York. They had several children as near as I can figure, but I only know of their daughters Sarah and Marion and a son named Manly. My ancestor, Jacob Lemons married Sarah Mumford and I have a great deal of information on their family thanks to his Civil War paperwork. I would be happy to share anything that I have on the Mumford's or Blackneys in exchange for information that you have gathered on Clarissa's line. Please get in touch and we can see how we can assist one another.

Lewis P is cited as being born in New Lebanon NY (Columbia Co) May 30 , 1811. I suspect Sally is the sister of Polly Cross who married Thomas Townsend and also went to Cattaraugus Co NY. Abigail died in Chatham in 1813. Any information greatly appreciated.
