All begin in 1881, deaths go to 1956 and births to 1931. I can take a look for you, here's what they have at the library and archives: http://www.nyscensushunt.com Maybe I can help!
Actually, it was illegal for them to send you a certified copy, you don't qualify for one. (See www.nyhealth.gov/vital_records/death.htm) I haven't ordered a VR from Columbia but many counties don't send copies of the original certificate, they copy the basic data from their records onto a computerized form. When I got a copy of my mother's 1920 birth certificate (she was with me) from another county they copied the information from a ledger rather than the original certificate. You can get a copy of the original certificate from the NY State Dept. of Health. They are notoriously slow (many months) in filling mail order requests but fill requests submitted in person in Albany much more promptly. There are researchers who, for a fee, will submit your request in Albany. -----Original Message----- From: smulvey [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, May 30, 2006 1:50 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Birth, Death, Marriage Records Hi All, I just requested a death certificate for an ancestor who died in 1915 from the Kinderhook town clerk. I was sent a certified copy that only has her married name and date of death. I just called to say there was no genealogical information, such as; parents names and cause of death. They told me to send another request and she would ask the Board of Health. Have the laws changed? Can I cite the Freedom of Information act to get the information I need? This ancestor is not direct to me, she is my second cousin twice removed. I don't know the answer to your question, but I have an ancestor, Lydia SUTHERLAND, born 1790 in Columbia County. She married Thomas Gan and moved to Greene County about 1810. I have been unable to trace her parentage. Is it possible there is a connection? Hi, Is anyone in a position to look up an 1898 marriage for me, probably in Philmont? Or suggest where I might find it myself? I tried the free pages lookup, but they evidently don't have NY state marriages. I live in CA, and really can't afford to apply to NY State as it's become so expensive! And years ago, when I sent them a check to get a death certificate for my grandmother, they couldn't find any! I happened to mention it to Loren Fay some time later, and he gave me the certificate number! So I wrote back with that, and the state finally came through. They kept my first check, so returned the second one I sent, which was very nice. My real grandmother died in Otsego County, Feb 1897, when Dad was 9. Grandpa (Edwin Pier Chapman) must have moved to Philmont before, after or upon his remarriage, which seems evidently in 1898 -- the 1900 Philmont census says he and second wife Myrtie had been married for 2 years. Myrtilla Philip Weed was also widowed, and had lived in Philmont all her life, being the grandmother I knew. I'm guessing that she and Grandpa met on one of his trips to New York City. He was a jeweler and often made trips there to buy and sell, perhaps stopping in Philmont on the way. TIA for any clues or suggestions ou can give me! Jean Chapman Snow Sherman Oaks, CA

I've looked at a page in the archives of North Adams where the birth of a child was listed. Could not make head or tails of that name. Trying to trace Robert Rosboro seems to be impossible. I thought if there was a marriage certificate I might find out who his parents were and from where in Ireland he came ( besides Northern Ireland ! ) Joan

Hi Joan, Don't have the marriage date, but her birthdate was 9 Jan 1811, not 10 Feb 1811. That was her baptismal date. From the Kinderhook baptisms transcript by Kelly: pg. 232, #5228, 1811, 2.10. Christina, born 1.9, of Christopher Garner and Helletje Huyck. Hi, We all know that WILLS are kept in the County Surrogate Office, but did you know that someone must file a PETITION for the will to be probated - this petition usually (none in very early ones) has the date and place of death of the person and names all of the heirs-at-law including the married surnames of the females even if these people are not in the will. Wills that concern property can also be found in the County Clerk's Office. DEEDS can be found in the County Clerk's Office - sometimes, especially when the person didn't have a probate record, the HEIRS are listed when the land is sold. COURT RECORDS in the County Clerk's Office - when ever a person went to court the reason is listed in the court records and this includes DIVORCES. STATE CENSUS RECORDS can be found in the County Clerk's Office. MARRIAGE RECORDS - you may or may not find marriage records in the County Clerk's Office - I found the indexes and the marriage records 1908-1935 in the SCHENECTADY County Clerk's Office. CITIZENSHIP records can be found in the County Clerk's Office. Any way, if you are going to be in the County Seat of some county it would be worth your while to visit both the Surrogate's Office and the County Clerk's Office. (also ask what else the Clerk's Office may have that will help you find your ancestors). Barbara _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. Find.
