Hi All, I'm doing "Family Tree" research on my g-grandma's family, who were from Columbia County. Her mother's name was Sarah (Sally) Ann Simmons, born in 1827. Christened at St. John's Church in Manorton. There were 10 children in this family. Sarah's brothers and sisters were: Levi, William N., Harry, Jonas R., Betsey, Caty(Katy or Catherine), John Alexander, Hannah Margaret, and Lucinda. They were born between the years1813 and 1835. The Simmons name was also "Simmon" and sometimes "Simon." Jonas R. Simmons fought in the Civil War and died in Albany in 1917, at the age of 85 yrs. The Simmons Family lived in Gallatin in southern Columbia County( and also Ancram). The parents of these children were Nicholas C. (Conrad) Simmons and Catherine Gerritzen, also spelled, Garrison. This part of my family was Native American(American Indian). If anyone out there has the last name of "Simmons" or "Gerritzen/Garrison" somewhere in their family tree, or you know of a fr! iend or co-worker,etc. who does, I would really enjoy hearing from you/them. Also, does anyone know of any other records that exist for Columbia County besides church christenings/marriages? Thanks for any help or info. that you can give me !! Kind Regards, Cliff Clayton
Hi All, On June 8th, I was informed of a sale of a tombstone on Ebay which happens to be my great great grandfather's first wife's stone. I contacted Ebay and they withdrew the sale. I contacted the seller and even had the local police contact him. He has since emailed with a nasty note say "YOU TELL ME WHERE IT GOES. AND I WILL TAKE CARE OF IT." Her name was Louisa Marston and she died in Salisbury, CT on Dec. 5, 1856. There is no record of burial in Salisbury that I have been able to find. Louisa's husband Erastus D. Marston spent most of his life in Copake and Hillsdale (mostly Copake), he was a blacksmith and probably lived and worked near the Copake Iron Works. His second wife Harriet (McIntosh) Marston died in Copake on 18 June 1889 and her death certificate says she was buried in Copake Iron Works. Does anyone know of a cemetery in or near Copake Iron Works? I do know that the foundry is now in the Taconic State Park. And I am going to call the park department on Monday. I am thinking that perhaps Louisa Marston was buried there also. Any help would be much appreciated as I would like to reset the stone. The man who has possession of it will not return it until I find out where it goes. Upon his arrival, he began work at his brother’s taxidermy studio in Denver, Colorado. There, he was able to study the anatomy of many different animals. Jonas then moved to New York City, where he studied with the internationally known naturalist, animal sculptor, and taxidermist Carl Akeley (1864-1926). Like Akeley, Jonas favored African wildlife and together they created the famous African Elephant Group that remains on exhibit in Akeley Hall at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. After service in World War I, Jonas returned to the Natural History Museum, where he worked on installations in the Hall of Asian Mammals. At this time, his sculptures began to be exhibited at the National Academy of Design. In 1930, Jonas completed Commemorating the Grizzly Bear, a mother bear protecting her cub, for the Denver Municipal Park, which shows the influe! nce of the Art Deco movement. Eventually, Jonas abandoned taxidermy to concentrate on sculpture and, in 1939, opened a studio in Mahopac, New York. "Jonas may be one of the lesser-known American animal sculptors, but he was no less significant. During his career, he was commissioned to create many life-size sculptures including the Grizzly Bear and Cubs at the Denver Museum of Natural History, nine Dinosaurs for the Sinclair Oil Company exhibit at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, and a Rhinoceros for the Davenport Public Museum in Iowa, as well as a dog for fellow sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. Jonas was also a member of the American Association of Museums and the New York Zoological Society." Hope this helps. If you ever come across anything about Clement DONSHEA, please let me know. My grandma Josey has more than 10,000 geneological sheets collected from Australia and other places tracing down our ancestors. I have yet to go through each sheet but will be happy to keep you up to date on what I uncover as I find each item out. Some of her records came from Salt Lake City, Utah from the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints. My nana was a mormon. So her and my Aunt spent a great many years getting these records together. They started collecting these records in 1975. I just have yet to sort them all out. (Also, some of her records are in duplicate and triplicate.)I still have to go to my moms in Arkansas and get the remaining records. ( I will do that next month, planning to go 4th of July.) I am bringing them one trunk load at a time. If you will be patient with me I will let you know what I uncover. I check this site daily for more info. I dont want to take t! his lightly,so it has been time consuming. I am diligent in this endevour. As I had mentioned earlier I have been working on this part of the family for the last 8 months. I will get back to you with more info at a later date. You can file away my e-mail addy and write to me again if you wish to see if I have made any more progress.

I have a lot of stuff on the family that I would be glad to share, but I have nothing on Daniel, but I have always wondered about him. He is very near to them in San Augustine. I am still trying to verify most of what I have. Some of my records have already be proven valid by other family members. However due to the lack of "valid" records for anything spelled out in black in white for a woman prior to 1850, other than the occasional land record, there isnt much to go on. Tracking a woman back then just did not seem a real priority as they are only counted as an age group, making real *hard evidence* a thing of "LUCK" if you should find something. I am still working on this family, and have been for the last 8 months. Should I come across something more concrete I will let you know. Thanks for the correction for Jesse T. Cole. I will fix that in my records. I had actually had the initial in papers as a B. until I found the one from census showing it to be the E. By the way, nice to converse with you as well cousin. :-)

I have never found any proof of the date of Squire and Lucretia's marriage. Have you found that proof? I also have found no connection between Daniel and this family other than they were both in San Augustine at the same time. Do you have a further proof? By way of correction, Jesse T Cole married Lucretia Brown in Oct 1837. The E is a mistake made by the census taker. I have found proof that the E should be T in a land record in Bell County Texas. Glad to meet you cousin. LInda Bowden

Philip Van Cortlandt. Pay records put his birth in or about 1745. It appears that he may have lived in Ulster County for a period before and after the War. However, he may have moved back to Columbia as a John Holmes is listed in the 1800 census in the township of Canaan. I am trying to prove that this man is the father of my 3rd great grandfather, George Holmes. George's birth date, as given in a family Bible, was February 7, 1798. He gave his birth place in the 1865 NY census as Dutchess county (perhaps near the Columbia border??). Has anyone come across any information on a John Holmes in Columbia that coincides with what I've outlined above? I know that, if the dates I have are right, this John was getting up there in years by the time my George was born...but there are a number of other facts that match nicely with the family lore regarding George's heritage. Any information or guidance would be appreciated.
