Dear List Members, I have written before about my ancestor, Hiram Dwight Pierce, who was born in Copake, NY, on May 25, 1810. (At the age of 18 he skated up the Hudson River to Troy, NY, and found work there as a blacksmith which was his trade. He married in 1833. By 1848, he had 7 children. His oldest child, Elvira Amelia Pierce, married my great grandfather, Ira Rose Travell, also of Troy. On March 6, 1849, Hiram set out for California to search for gold. His journal is called A Forty-Niner Speaks). Last year my sister and I were contacted by a man who was putting together a film about the gold rush to be shown on PBS. We sent him some photographs and information about Hiram Pierce and his family. I have just heard from the man and learned that the film will be aired on Monday night, Nov. 6th, probably in most places at 9:00 EST, under the title, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. The web site for the production states that the two-hour documentary follows several people and one of them is Hiram Pierce, "a New York blacksmith who wrenched himself away from his wife and children to risk all that he had in the hope of securing a more prosperous future." <_http://www.yellowjerseyfilms.com/index.html_ (http://www.yellowjerseyfilms.com/index.html) > I thought I would alert the Mailing List in case some members might find the documentary of interest. Somehow I have been dropped from the NY Columbia List. Several weeks ago the resubsacribe worked for a couple of days then dropped again. Help ! I miss the Columbia List. ! I still receive my other Roots webs lists Fulton, Greene, etc. My computer deletion process is not apparently at fault here, at least there is no record of it in my deletion list, auto or manual. I hope you can help fix this recent problem. Thanks BaysideBruce

John agreed to my forwarding this to some of the lists where the Palatines originated. I raised this earlier on the lists and got considerable response. However, do to age related health issues and a couple of projects I'm trying to put to bed, I wasn't up to handling the organization and oversight of the project. Thankfully John has stepped forward and already made major inroads. Anything anyone can do to support John in this effort would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure. This is going to be a BIG event! To John - Again my heartfelt thanks for taking up the cause. Regards, Jim Groat _____ From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, October 02, 2006 3:13 PM Subject: Palatine's To America TriCenteneal Celebration The New York Chapter of Palatines to America is planning a celebration of the three hundredth anniversary of the arrival of the Palatines in the Hudson Valley. The celebration will be held in or near Kingston in June 2010. It currently is in the advanced planning stage. Speakers will include Hank Z. Jones and Phillip Otterness as well as others versed in the Palatine history and the genealogy research of our German speaking ancestors. This celebration will include tours to areas significant to the arrival of the Palatines. A trip to Nuttin Island (now Governors Island) has been discussed but has not yet been finalized. A planning meeting is scheduled for 7 pm 6 Oct 2006 in Saugerties in conjunction with the fall meeting of the New York Chapter in Saugerties. Anyone interested in attending or helping at a later date is welcome. Contact [email protected] for further information. The Germantown Historian has a committee that is planning a year long celebration which will include dedication of a Historic Monument to commemorate the East Camp. I read your comments on roots web which expressed interest in this subject and I hope you will join our celebration of our Palatine Ancestors.
