    1. [NYCOLUMB] NYS Library Possible Weekend Hours
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. As a genealogy researcher I am sure you would love to be able to utilize the wonderful research material available at the New York State Library in Albany during the weekend. This would make it so much easier for out of state travelers and especially for those local researchers who work full time. Please read the following two items that deal with an effort to have weekend hours at the library and if you see, fit please write a letter, email or fax as requested below. As a presentation to the Regents on this topic is being made on January 8, time is of the utmost importance. If this proposal for weekend hours interest you, send an email or fax before January 8 to have your voice heard. Thanks, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY Email From Jeanne Keefe - Troy Irish Genealogy Webmaster Hello Everyone: On Friday I received this email from Loretta Ebert, Director, New York State Library and I am asking for your help. Loretta, who was previously my Director of Libraries at RPI, moved on to the NYS Library last summer and before she left Rensselaer I asked her to look into the possibility of keeping the NYS library open for one day over the weekend. Since most of us work 9-5, M-F, we are unable to do any research at our State Library because we can't get there when its open during the week. I also mentioned that many genealogists travel to the Albany-Troy-Schenectady area to do family research and are severely limited by the library's present schedule. Weekend hours, even if only one day, would allow more of us to access the very important resources that are only available at the NYS Library. In September, I met Loretta and she mentioned that she was encountering some resistance to the idea, but felt confident that she would be able to open the library, maybe on Saturdays, at some point late in the Fall. In the following letter you will see that she is asking for some help in convincing the Board of Regents to allow her to open the library on the weekend and has asked for letters (or emails)in support of this move. Please read her letter below and take a few minutes to mail, email or fax a brief letter to Loretta in support of her initiative. I think it is a very important opportunity for genealogists and historians to have their concerns voiced and research needs recognized. This is also a unique opportunity to be involved in a change that has the potential to improve access to these important records and resources, especially for those of us needing to do family research in the New York State Library. For more information about the NYS Research Library's genealogy collections use this link: http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/gengen.htm.Thank you all very much, in advance, for taking the time to read this and I hope you can take a few minutes to send Loretta a response by the end of the week. Jeanne Keefe TIGS Webmaster and Visual Resources Librarian Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Architecture Library 100 8th Street, Greene 326 Troy,, NY 12180 tel: 518-276-2727 email: [email protected] Email From Director, New York State Library Loretta Ebert Director, New York State Library Cultural Education Center - Rm 10D34 Albany, NY 12230 518-473-1189 [email protected] Hi Jeanne, Happy New Year! I am preparing a presentation to the Regents in early January (8th) about opening the library on Saturdays. As I recall, you were supportive of this idea. I wonder if you would be willing to send a letter to me advocating extended hours for the library, citing difficulties with the current Monday-Friday 9 to 5 schedule and the lack of access to the "wonderful" resources of the New York State Library. Use whatever perspectives you have: librarian, genealogist, local historian, or all of them! I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you know of others who could provide similar supportive letters, would you ask them to send such to me too, or let me know their names? Thanks so much for your help, I think these kinds of testimonials are most effective with the power structure around here. My contact info: Loretta Ebert Director, New York State Research Library Cultural Education Center Room 10D34 Albany, NY 12230 Email (an email attachment is okay): [email protected] or FAX: 518-486-6880 Thanks a million! 1. [NYCOLUMB] FAMILY OF ELISHA & JEREME KINNE / KINNEY / KENNY
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Kinne, Kenny, Kinney, Cady, Jackson, Stranahan, Fitch Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VRB.2ACE/4724 Message Board Post: HELP IS REQUESTED TRACING THE FAMILY OF JEROME / JEREMY KINNE / KINNEY / KENNY’S FAMILY I am looking for information on the family of Jeremiah/Jeremy Kinne, son of Elisha and Thankful [FITCH] Kinne / Kenny of Canaan, Columbia County and Granby, Oswego Co., NY The members of this family included Jeremy, b 1779; Erastus, b 1781; Anna, b 1783; John, b 1785; Stephen Fitch, b 1789; Rebecca, b c 1793; States, b 1797; and Elisha Jr. b 1809. There may have been others. Tracing this family is confused by the various spellings of Kinne, such as Kenny and Kinney Elisha Kinne & his wife, Thankful Fitch, arrived in Canaan, Columbia Co., NY from Worthington, Mass., in time to be included in the census of 1800 with a family consisting of 2 2 2 – 2 1 - 1 1 2. Elisha Kinne on 10 February, 1802, purchased a 150 acre farm in Canaan for $2500 from Samuel Potter. This farmland was bordered by the properties of Philip Frisbee, William Stranahan, Patrick Hamilton & Ezra & Oliver Cady. On March 29, 1820 Elisha Kinne obtained a small mortgage in order to purchase 7 acres of land in Canaan. In the description of this land reference is made to “a white pine? standing in the line of land belonging to Jereme Kinny…” Jereme Kinne signed this document as a witness. Also in the census of Canaan in 1820 was the family of Jeremiah Kenny, page 302. The ages of this family suggest that Jeremiah Kenny was married c 1805, and he & his wife had two children born before 1810 and two more born c 1810 – 1815. On 3 May, 1828, Jerome Kinney of the town of Lysander, Onondaga Co., paid $450.00 to Chauncey Betts and Mariah Ann, his wife of Lysander, for “All that part of military Lot number twenty seven of the original township of Lysander (and now town of Granby) being north half of subdivision number three of said lot.....containing fifty-one acres and fourteen hundreds of an acre of land...” This transaction was carried out two of years after Elisha Kinne Sr. died in Canaan. In the 1830 census of Granby, Oswego County, NY Jeremy Kinne & family are found with what appears to be three children i.e. 1 male of 5 & under 10; 1 female of 15 & under 20; 1 female of 20 & under 30. An older female, presumed to be his wife, was age 40 & under 50. Comparing Jeremy Kinney’s wife’s census age in 1820 compared to her age in 1830, it appears she was born c 1775-1780. On 14 January, 1839 Jerome Kinne and Mary, his wife, town of Granby, Oswego Co., NY sold 100 acres of land (reserving however, a small piece of ground occupied as a burying ground.)…” in the town of Canaan. This sale follows the death of Thankful Fitch Kinne in 1838. She was Jerome’s mother. Jeremy Kinney lived next to Elias Cady Jr in the census of 1840 in the town of Granby, Oswego Co., N.Y. His family consisted of 1 male of 5 and under 10; 1 male 10 and under 15; 1 male 15 and under 20; 1 male, 60 and under 70; 2 females, 15 and under 20; & 1 female of 40 and under 50. The 1840 census includes a much larger family group than was previously listed in other census years. This raises the possiblilty that Jeremy’s first wife died and he remarried a widow with children of her own. Her name may have been Mary. No further information has been found concerning Jeremy Kinne's whereabouts after 1840. It is not known if he died in the 1840s or moved to a new location. Question – Does anyone have any family history or genealogy or further information on Jeremy Kinne’s children, the name of his wife or wives, and other family background? Such information would be very much appreciated as I am trying to determine of Jereme had a second wife, and whether perhaps she was Mary Jackson Cady who was the widow of William Cady, son of Elias Cady. Sincerely, David Rogers.

    1. Re: [NYCOLUMB] Probate Court for wills in Columbia County
    2. Hi folks, I had 2 replys to my query on Wills probated in Columbia County, New York. As a result I have an email address for a real live person back there. I live in Blue River, Oregon. Needless to say it would be hard for me to have a look at those old records. The second reply was to ask if I had any luck so the following in the luck that I had this morning (21 November 2006). First of all I called the number that was in the first email from Susan. Turns out that number was for the City of Hudson Criminal Court. Rose gave me the number for the City of Hudson Clerk who in turn gave me the number for the county clerk who couldn't help because while they have some wills most of them are recorded in the Surrogate courty. However she told me that I really should contact a title company who could look up the book and page number to speed things up. So she gave me a name and number for a title company. Those numbers are pasted in below. The gentleman I spoke with gave me an email address to write out what I was looking for since besides the will of my ancestor I would need the property that he settled on in New Lebanon, Columbia County, New York. So here are the useful numbers to save any of you good folks the time and expense of following the links. Bye the bye every one of these folks were pleasant to have spent time with by phone and seemed more than willing to go the distance for my in my search.
