The Babcock line from their father William Avery Bacock is found on several ancestry world trees or alternatively at worldconnect.rootsweb.com/. Ebenezer Cady served as guardian for Sarah (Babcock) Kingsley's children for reasons that are not entireley clear - although I have several possible explanations. The Babcock line is tracable back to Kings in Europe. If you have not already found it see the Babcock Genealogy by Stephen Babcock. It's an index of the links to each cemetary which will take you to the tombstone names & dates in each cemetary. I'm searching Van Alphen, Van zoelen, Finkle, Scutt, van der Biesen and it's been very helpful -- but be careful, dates and spellings may not be accurate. My Horace Phillips ended up in Wolcott, NY. He was born in 1817 and named a daughter Lavina that got me to thinking maybe she was named after a relative of his. I also found a death notice, from Stuyvesant, NY, in the family Bible. It was for a Sarah Helen Hull. Her mother was Sarah Phillips (Clapp) so I figured, to be in the family Bible she must be connected to our Phillips. That was how I made the leap to Columbia Co. I have no idea where Horace was born, he married a Sarah VanValkenburg in Glenville, NY. Does any of this fit with your Phillips? Bruce, Hank Jones' "The Palatine Families of New York - 1710" makes reference to a number of Schmidt-Hoff connections, primarily sponsorships at baptisms. I suspect there were a number of Schmidt-Hoff marriages. One that stuck out in particular was as follows: Wilhelm Hoff, the son of Johan Daniel Hoff, b. in Livingston Manor, married 8 Dec 1741 a Germantown Ref Ch. Maria Magdalena Michel. Their second daughter Elisabetha was bap. 10 Jun 1744 at Red Hook Luth. Ch. She married 29 Nov 1762 at Red Hook Luth Ch., Philip Schmidt. This is just a long shot in the dark since there are a great number of Hoff's in the area at the time and an even greater number of Schmidts. I strongly suggest that you check with the local library to see if you can get a copy of Jones' book. It is an invaluable tool for anyone researching the Palatine families of the Hudson River Valley. Jones has a web site where his books are for sale but they are a bit pricey. I hope this helps a bit. I descend from a Simeon Marsh of Connecticut whose wife was supposed to have been named Eunice Lathrop. I don't think it's just "family folklore" since for the next few generations (this was around the time of the Revolution) many of our Marsh ancestors gave sons the middle name of "Lathrop", as if to keep the memory alive. My Simeon apparently died in Connecticut (possibly Fairfield) about the time the Revolution began. His oldest son, John Lathrop Marsh, sided with the British and moved to Canada where he married a local girl, Sarah Estabrooks, and raised a family. (He lived in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada). But the three youngest sons (Simeon, Thomas Lathrop, and Solomon Marsh) all moved down to North Carolina with their widowed mother, Eunice Lathrop Marsh. (I'm a direct descendant of both Simeon and Solomon Marsh). We have been trying desperately to track down our Eunice Lathrop Marsh but so far with 0 success, and it's getting discouraging!! We had thought she was the daughter of (I think!!) Hope Lathrop, but I could have that wrong, I get so confused over all these names!!! I think she was supposed to have been born around 1732 in Tolland, CT. But we could always have the WRONG Eunice Lathrop: there are so many of them!!! I also heard that our Eunice's mother may have moved in her later years to Dutchess Co, NY??? ANY help you could give me would be so much appreciated!!!! Thanks! Your (maybe?) cousin, Patti Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Is anyone looking for Matthews from upstate NY; specifically Columbia and Greene counties? I descend from John Albert 1803-1859 -> Lauren Alonzo 1837-1906 ->William Tompkins 1870-1945 -> Harry Allen Matthews 1902-1982 (my father). John Albert came to Greene from Columbia County, per the census; but, I have not found his parents. They remained in Greene Co. and all are buried there in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Ashland. Any information much appreciated. Mignon
Cliff Lamere has been an asset for Hudson Valley families & genealogists with his thoughts and his 'Albany and Eastern New York' web site. He leads the way promoting & preserving family records. His idea in preserving his parents memory, and honoring them with music is not only novel but is heart warming. I commend Cliff for his endeavors. Good luck Cliff and thanks for your leadership, ...and ideas. Bruce M. Smith, Bayside, CA.
