Hello, I'm interested in gathering the history, photos, etc. of the Chatham Center Methodist church. I am wondering if anyone on this list is connected or has information. I am new to the list, so not sure if this church has been discussed before. Thanks!! Grace

The cem. is the towns , I thought, not sure, I didn't think it was associated with the church. The church is the Christ's Lutheran Church of Ghent, which was just sold to the Mennonites. I found it in the N.Y.State Library which is on the 7th floor of the Cultural Education building in Albany (not N.Y. City as one might think by the name) and was able to photocopy by use of an overhead copier about sixty pages or so of history on the family and genealogy charts. I hope to go back there and copy some more. If you are looking for an ancestor who was a Schermerhorn or married to a Schermerhorn it would be helpful to me if you list it like so: (this is my line b.t.w.): Harriet Schermerhorn b. 11 Oct 1814 (m. George Lansing)of Northumberland, N.Y. was dau. to : Cornelius K. Schermerhorn b. 2 Apr 1779 (m. to Catherine Sands) of either Saratoga Cty or Dutchess Cty (possibly Rhinebeck, NY), son of Jan Schermerhorn bap. on 11 Aug. 1752 (m. Catherine Knickerbocker of Linlithgow, Scotland) who was of Rhinebeck N.Y., who was son of: Ryer Schermerhorn bapt. 24 Feb. 1702 of (Albany...just so. of Albany apparently is or was "Schodack Landing" where this line of Schermerhor! ns were from/there is another line from Schenectady and still other lines all desc. from same ances. who will be mentioned at bottom of this email)This Ryer S. m. (first, Geertje Ten Eyck which is not my line)2nd wife (my line) was: Marritje Decker Osterhout (Osterhout may have been her former m. name as she was a widow when she marr. Ryer) Ryer S. was son of: Jacob Jacobse (Jacobse meaning son of (another)Jacob)Schermerhorn who was b. abt 1661 who m. Gerritie Hendrickse Van Buren; This Jacob Jacobse Schermerhorn was the son of: Jacob Jansen (son of Jan, in other words) Van Amsterdam Van Schermerhorn (expl. later on this name)and who m. Jannetje Cornelisen (dau. of Cornelius) Egmont Van Voorhout (I have lots of info on her name and lineage)and they were both from a place called "Schermerhorn" which in Dutch means: Scher "clear or bright" / mer "sea"/ horn "point" or a section of land a "point" jutting out to the sea in other words ...and this place called Schermerhorn was i! n a place called Waterland which is in Amsterdam, Holland. He used the double name to clarify where he was from and then dropped the Van Amsterdam and used Van Schermerhorn and subsequent gen. used only Schermerhorn. His father and anc. however only used their own first names followed by the nameof their own father which they added "sen" to however we see later in dutch tradition in America where they used "se" (I am not clear if se refers to one gender and sen to another, perhaps someone else can clarify). (He died after 1654 in Holland). His father was: Jan Jacobsen b. in 1590 in Schermerhorn, Waterland, Holland who m. ? who was the son of : Jacob Reyersen b. 1569 and who m. ? who was the son of: Reyer J. who was b. abt. 1541 in Holland. For any more info or if you wish me to photocopy all I have you will have to contact me and pay me for copies and postage. I am very very busy but if you are patient I can do this for you or post some data for you from what I have. I was very excited to find this book. It is falling apart, has some photos of! afew Schermerhorns and of a house where the Schodack Landing Schermerhorns lived which was so. of Albany apparently. Will try to post more info. another time. I can be reached at: gracefultruth@gmail.com or better to post ques. here so all can see and share what we relate re: this family. Hi Cliff, I've seen that account in the History of Columbia County, citing the same source. I believe you have the likely candidate. On the same page, in the above, is another later account of an attack, also in Kinderhook, on the family of Jochem Van Valkenburgh. He shot the indian abducting his wife. Wounded her in the process, but got her back. The Muster Rolls of New York Provincial Troops, 1755-1764, also indicates that men were called out at that time to blunt the attacks and were in the field for a few months. Jim -----Original Message----- From: nycolumb-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nycolumb-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Cliff Lamere Sent: Wednesday, July 08, 2009 2:42 PM To: nycolumb@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYCOLUMB] John Gardenier scalped in 1755 I found the following information in Google Books. It was a quote from a 1755 New York City newspaper during the French and Indian War. After John Gardenier was scalped, a collection was taken in New York City and the money was sent to the Gardenier family. I have found the newspaper article transcribed three times. The one below (and another) appears to be a transcription that changed the spelling of a few words to those of contemporary times. Cliff Lamere ___________________ http://books.google.com/books?dq=%22john+gardenier%22+albany&pg=PA222&id=xQg FAAAAYAAJ Memoirs of the life of Henry Van Schaack, Embracing Selections from his Correspondence During the American Revolution. by his nephew Henry Cruger Van Schaack. (Chicago, 1892) pg 222 APPENDIX B "We hear from Kinderhook that on Wednesday, the 2nd instant, as four men, two boys and a negro were hoeing corn in a field near that place, they were surprised and fired upon by six Indians and a Frenchman, which wounded one of the men, a boy and a negro fellow, when they, with two others, took to their heels. The seventh, named John Gardenier, ran towards their arms, that were nigh at hand; and having dispatched two of the Indians, a third closed in upon him, and, in the scuffle, the Frenchman came up, and seeing Gardenier get the better of the Indians, he knocked him down with his piece and afterwards scalped him, when the Indians made off and carried their dead with them. Some short time after, Gardenier came to himself, and with some difficulty reached the fort. He was so stunned with the blow he received from the Frenchman, that he was insensible of his being scalped until he was informed by the people, who discovered the blood, but remembered the whole of their proceedings before, and said he could have killed three of the Indians had not the second gun he took up missed fire. On the receipt of the above news the sum of twelve pounds was immediately raised, by a few gentlemen in this city, and sent to John Gardenier for his gallant behavior, to support his wife and family during his illness; and it is to be hoped that those gentlemen who would willingly infuse a martial spirit in the armies now going against our enemies, will follow an example so truly worthy of their imitation. -- The New York Mercury of 14th July, 1755." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I suspect that this John Gardenier was the Johannes Gardenier who was born about 1721 in Albany, NY. He was the great grandson of Jacob Janse Gardenier. Johannes married 22 Jun 1750 Marytje "Maria" Woodcock at the Albany Reformed Church, although both were from Kinderhook at the time. Their first child Johannes was baptized 3 Jul 1752 at the Kinderhook Reformed Church. No other children were baptized before the scalping. Their later children were baptized at Kinderhook Reformed Church as well, including one as late as 1767. If I'm correct about the identity of this John Gardenier, then the scalping did not cause an early death. We had a discussion about the fort earlier on this mailing list. I have since been able to determine that the current address where the fort was located in Kinderhook is 15 Hudson St. Cliff Lamere Albany, NY ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NYCOLUMB-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
