Linda, I looked at the Census and it is Vermont as the birthplace. It is difficult to interpret, but in 1860, that's the way they wrote "VT". Mac

Linda, I was able to enhance that census and it looks like he was born in VT and his age was 23.. It looks like they started to write some other state and then wrote VT over it.
