Hello Bev, Thanks for this information. Nicholas in jail in 1850 and Nicholas in the poorhouse in 1860, for some reason, both sound possible. It would be interesting to find out what NCOD refers to as a place of birth. My father died at age 69. I seem to remember a long time ago him telling me that he would probably die at age 69 because his father and grandfather both died at age 69. Is there any kind of death index for the area? My grandfather was born about 1859 and the 1880 census shows his mother as a widow. Therefore Nicholas O' Brien must have died between 1859 and 1880.
