Hi Jean, I am from that area. I now live in Illlinois but my family still lives there. I visit every summer. It is known to be a great wilderness...then and now. It is very rustic. I was wondering if you contacted the Feinberg Library in Plattsburg or Addie Sheilds, the Clinton Co Historian? I don't remember hearing the Saunders name in the area...but it has been awhile. It might be worth a try with Elizabethtown area...the main Essex co. records are there.
