My grandfather, George Edward O'Brien, was born in Chazy NY about 1859-1864. He was the son of Nicholas O'Brien and Sarah Perkins. The 1880 U. S. Census shows Sarah O'Brien age 57 a widow and her son George O'Brien age 21 living in Chazy NY. According to the census they were both born in Vermont. I found a marriage for Nicholas O'Brien and Elizabeth Perkins on 14 Oct 1847 in Panton VT. I don't know for sure if this is my great-grandparents. George came to Lowell MA in the early 1880's and started his family in 1883. I have plenty of information after 1883 but next to nothing before 1883. Hello Bob, I checked all of my Clinton County references, primarily Catholic Church registers, and could not find any sign of Nicholas O'Brien as the father of any children. Next, I checked the 1850 census and found two, both listed as Nicholas O'Brien, born Ireland, and found at Plattsburgh. The first was age 40, occupation was tailor, and current residence was at the jail for drunkenness. The other Nicholas was age 52, had a wife Almira, age 31, born VT, and one daughter Mary J., age 1, born VT. I found one Nicholas O'Brien in the 1860 at Beekmantown. He was age 68 and residing in the Poorhouse. His birth place is listed as NCOD, but I have no clue what that refers to. I've had no success with the 1870 trying any number of searches.
