    3. My family all came from Chazy Lake or Saranac Lake and always called it 'upstate'. I never heard them call it anything else other than the Adirondacks. Co. and we consider anything north of Syacuse as heading into Northern New York. The area from Lake Champlain to the St. Lawrence county line would be a defininition of "Northern New York". Naturally, the Adirondack (northern) area would be a part. Upstate is a term use by people in New York City - always has been. To them, the Catskills are the country and in "days of yore" they knew nothing of the area beyond that. When I was a boy, in Dannemora, Saturday Evening Post Magazine did an article about the prison there and referred to the area as "Little Siberia". > > The point I was trying to make, was this; When you see "Upstate New York" in an article, think of this relationship: Upstate---a New York City terminology___ Northern - a resident's terminology.
