Hello List, This is my first posting here. I've lost my Grandmother and I hope someone here can help me locate her. Of all my relatives, she is proving the most wily! She always lied about her age (2nd hubbie was 2 yrs. younger than her oldest child!) and refused to use her real name. She swore she was born in Buffalo but Buffalo has never heard of her. Her father was the black sheep of his family and after leaving Yorkshire, he moved his family all over North America. The one hint I have found is that her grandmother, Carrie (Caroline) BURNISTON age 52 entered the U.S. through Ellis Island on Nov. 29, 1902 accompanied by her granddaughters Carrie age 5 and Gladys age 3. Her destination was listed as Plattsburgh. She was going to the home of her son-in-law A. (Arthur) WOOD & wife Beatrice who worked as a linesman for the Postal Telegraph & Cable Co.- at least I think that's what it says. It's very hard to read. Carrie and Gladys were my Grandmother's older sisters. Family legend has it that Gladys died somewhere at a very young age (maybe Plattsburgh?) and my Grandmother took her name as her own as she hated her real name - which was Minnie Gabriel WOOD. Some family papers show my Grandmother's birth date as Sept. 27, 1904. Can anyone tell me if the Postal Telegraph & Cable Co. was a real company and if there are any employee records? Also, are there any indexes of the 1900 census for Plattsburgh - although I doubt they would have been there in 1900 considering the age of their daughter Gladys. Any help would be most appreciated! Sincerely, Carol Coquitlam, B.C. Canada
