    1. [NYCLINTO] Kent
    2. Cheryl, The only reference to Kent in the index is reference to the Kent-Delord house. The note is discussing where various British officers were headquartered or in other words the homes they occupied. It says: "Junior officiers were quartered at other homes, including the Kent-Delord house." There is a small map in the book ad it shows this house as being on Dead Creek Road about where Cornelia street enters it. There are some other references to the DELORD name but not Kent. Thanks, Unette LEMKE

    1. [NYCLINTO] Guynup
    2. Linda, The Gunyup reference is in a footnote (in the Richard Parrot Mallory recollection actually) and probably not new news for you. It refers to this statement: "On Rugar Street near the Maine Mills there was a "Still Farm" now owned by William V.S. Woodward." The note says: "The farm is now owned by Charles Miller and occupied by Charles Gunyup." The date of the book is listed as 1964. Important note in the preface by the editor Allan S. Everest: " In editing the papers, I have omitted long family genalogies and a few repititious passages......" and later in a note: "Genealogists may wish to consult the original of the "Notebooks," at the College library in Plattsburgh for the description of the six children, and also of the family of eight of the narrator, Henry Dominy." Given the above two statements, I would highly recommend anyone having the opportunity to consult these. The Notebooks are of Dr. D.S. Kellogg. In fact, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has already done so. I assume the College Library is the Feinberg. Thanks, Unette LEMKE

    2. Hello Unette, Thank you for that information! It sure does sound like there might be a connection. She would have been a young girl around 1840, I think. How would I get a look at that book. Would the Library be able to get it for me? Thanks again. Jan in Florida

    3. Unette, I have never before heard of this book. > The book is: Recollections of Clinton County and the Battle of Plattsburgh 1800-1840 I'm wondering if it might be possible for you to tell me if any Kents are mentioned. I have been researching the various Kent families living in Ellenburg for some time, and would love to get them straightened out a little more. If there are clues in this book, then I will try to find it. Cheryl

His comments solved one Hare mystery, but caused several others. The first Hare settler in Clinton County, David Hare, who had a large family, including at least seven sons and three daughters Everyone in the family named their children for their siblings, so there's not a wide range of names--just the same ones used over and over. In the middle of all these Davids, Sidneys, Benjamins, Daniels, and Josephs, one sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb. David, Jr. named a child Richard Mallory Hare. We could never figure out from whence that name had come. Mr. Mallory's article proved there was a Hare/Mallory connection--obviously a close one. Problem is, that we can't figure out who was the Hare who married Mrs. Mallory. I was not aware that a Guynup was mentioned--I know that Thomas Guynup (Guinup in the early accounts) was in the War of 1812--National Archives records show that he was in the MIller Regiment. There's also a document in the Surrogate's office appointing Thomas the executor of his brother John's estate. According to the document John was killed in the War of 1812, but in the 1850 census there's John Guinup living just up the road from Thomas--and he's just the right age to be Thomas' brother. Very strange. The Sutro Library (State of California's Genealogical Library) owns the book, but it can't be found. If someone owns a copy, I'd love to know what it says about Guynup/Guinups. I believe Borchard Guinup was also in the War, though he's not listed as a member of the Miller Regiment. Linda

    1. [NYCLINTO] Davidson
    2. Jan, I'm not sure if you will find this useful info, but I found a reference to Davidson in a book I currently have checked out of the Historical Society. The book is: Recollections of Clinton County and the Battle of Plattsburgh 1800-1840 Lucretia and Ann Eliza Davidson are listed as being schoolmates to one gentleman giving his account of the battle. In another the woman mentions " Our little society of girls in Plattsburgh was very pleasant. It was the home of the Davidsons, and Lucretia was about my age. You may wish to take a look at the book if these are yours. Good Luck! 1. Re: [NYCLINTO] Records for Clinton County prior to 1880.
    2. Many of the Protestant records are buried in church archives--you'll have contact the churches. You might also check LDS films--though I know that at least a couple have refused to allow their records to be filmed by LDS. Knowing the denomination of one or both your ancestors would be a great start. My family (Guynup) lived in Saranac at that time. My great grandfather, Aaron Guynup, married Charlotte Hare who was from Peru. They were married by a Justice of the Peace in Peru. It would be lost forever, except that when he applied for a Civil War pension, they wrote to the JP who sent a copy. I have a copy of that. Linda Guynup Dewey Guynup, Hare, Comstock, Mallory

    2. I have a problem searching marriage records for Clinton County during the period from 1850 to 1860. It would have been a protestant marriage so the wonderful lookups for the Catholic records does me no good. Any ideas? My search is for the marriage of George Jennings and Eliza Ann Davidson, daughter of Henry and Margaret Davidson of Saranac Township, (Saranac Lake?), Clinton County, NY. That's all the information I have. Other than the year of marriage is probably shortly after 1850. The Davidson's are listed in the 1850 census for that area. And my Grandfather, son to that marriage, was born in Saranac, Clinton County, N.Y. ( His name was Charles Henry Jennings, b Oct 21, 1858.) Any help is gratefully received. Jan in Florida

    1. [NYCLINTO] Records for Clinton County prior to 1880 on Allard family
    2. Zina_1
    3. Yes, I did check the Surrogate's office for probate records on the Moses Allard family. In fact Eddie Shields helped me search there and nothing was found. I also searched for a mortgage record and land deeds in the Deed Office. I also checked the microfilm records of the Plattsburgh Sentinel and Republic and did not find any obituaries even though I have the dates of death from pension records. In the Surrogate's office I found a notice to creditors which was printed in the Albany Tribune in the probate records of Royal Wheeler of Mooers. I've been told that Albany is three hours from Mooers Forks. Perhaps I should be looking in the Albany Tribune for my obituaries. Mooers did not have a newspaper in the 1800's. I did send for all the Allard burials from the McLellan survey and none of it was my family. Thanks for the list of Clinton County Historians. My next step is to drop a letter to Carol Nedeau, Mooers Historian. Oh, we did find Charlotte Allard living with her son-in-law, David Lover in 1892. This was on a Third Election District list for the Town of Moores. I did not know such lists existed, but its as good as a census record. It gives all the people in a household, sex, age, what country born and occupation. This record was forwarded to me from another researcher so I'm not sure where they found the list. Leatrice

    3. Leatrice, Allard is a very common French Canadian name and church records would be the first place I would look. I would be happy to check my resources and check with some others who might have information also. I would also try posting to the Genforum message board for Clinton County. The Clinton Board is fairly active and lots of people there have different church records. Genforum is at www.genealogy.com. Pat above message is forwarded at Pat's request
