Hello Bob, I am working on a Desso/Dussault line that are in Champlain, Clinton, New York and the father was also in Burlington, Chittenden,Vermont. Perhaps we should compare information? I have these names Louis, John Baptiste and even a Julia St. Dennis, but the dates are not the same as yours below? They are likely relatives though? Hello Bev, Thanks for this information. Nicholas in jail in 1850 and Nicholas in the poorhouse in 1860, for some reason, both sound possible. It would be interesting to find out what NCOD refers to as a place of birth. My father died at age 69. I seem to remember a long time ago him telling me that he would probably die at age 69 because his father and grandfather both died at age 69. Is there any kind of death index for the area? My grandfather was born about 1859 and the 1880 census shows his mother as a widow. Therefore Nicholas O' Brien must have died between 1859 and 1880. Hello Bob, I checked all of my Clinton County references, primarily Catholic Church registers, and could not find any sign of Nicholas O'Brien as the father of any children. Next, I checked the 1850 census and found two, both listed as Nicholas O'Brien, born Ireland, and found at Plattsburgh. The first was age 40, occupation was tailor, and current residence was at the jail for drunkenness. The other Nicholas was age 52, had a wife Almira, age 31, born VT, and one daughter Mary J., age 1, born VT. I found one Nicholas O'Brien in the 1860 at Beekmantown. He was age 68 and residing in the Poorhouse. His birth place is listed as NCOD, but I have no clue what that refers to. I've had no success with the 1870 trying any number of searches. When my eyes stop crossing on me, I'll look further. {G} Bev -----Original Message----- From: brien.familytree [mailto:brien.familytree@verizon.net] Sent: Sunday, February 29, 2004 2:56 PM To: NYCLINTO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYCLINTO] O'BRIEN family of Chazy My grandfather, George Edward O'Brien, was born in Chazy NY about 1859-1864. Looking for possible marriage record for Nathaniel Hayes and Betsey Fuller in the Saranac area cir; 1855. All help greatly appreciated.
Searching for info on family of Thomas McAlona in Chazy Ny in 1840 census. Have no other information on this family. Cant find them in previous or next census in Chazy or elsewhere. Looked through a history of Chazy in NYS library in Albany and saw a Thomas McAnana listed in index as one of a group of individuals in Chazy to apply for a license to open a tavern in 1847. With messy cursive this could be close. That's all I could find. Most interested in any advice on how to continue looking for information about this family in Chazy area. Church records, land records, etc. My McAlona ancestors were Protestant and came from Belfast area through Quebec and then Champlain NY to Washington Co in 1825-26. I don't believe this to be the same name as McAloon which I have seen in the area. Thanks, Mike
Hi - I am looking for the Philip Roberts family of Champlain. I have been able to find him in the 1880 census with his wife Susan. I was wondering if there is anyone who might be also researching this family and would they know if Philip is still living in Clinton Co in 1860 ??? or 1865 ?? Philip is Canadian and so is his wife - he was b. 1817 his wife b. 1820 - the children still present in 1880 are all born NY. I was hoping to find children Frank and Gertrude earlier in this household. Appreciative of any assistance. Jack Scott Hanover,Pa.
Hi Linda, I will dig out the divorce decree for Robert Carroll and Lillian Duley. But his date of birth is Apr 25, 1918. Is this your line? Hi Sande, Sorry, I can't help you with your marriage question regarding Charles ROBERTS and Lillian DULEY. But what caught my eye was your mention of Lillian being married to Robert CARROLL first. Do you have any more details about that marriage - or of Robert Carroll? Sande, Albany can be slow in their response simply due to the sheer volume of requests and the limited staff. New York began keeping vital statistics in 1880 and the early records are not complete. Not all events were forwarded to Albany. Your best bet would be to contact the Town in which the event occurred. Please see the Clinton County website for the address: http://www.co.clinton.ny.us/Departments/CC/CCCertificates.htm For an obituary I would recommend using interlibrary loan to get a microfilm of the newspaper that you need. The NY State Library has a listing of newspapers that are available around the state. Your local library would know what they can get from where. The Champlain Counselor as well as several others are available for 1900. Check http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/nysnp/210.htm for the Clinton County holdings at various libraries. You could also try the churches in the area where the funeral would have been held. Church records are available through the Latter-day Saints at their Family History Centers. Check http://www.familysearch.org to find one near you. Good luck. Mary- Thank you for your reply. Sorry, no James JOHNSON. My JOHNSON is Jeremiah b. 1791 CT, married Harriet BRIDGES abt 1830, 6 children: William, Lysander, Sherman, Hulda, Ellen, and Elizabeth. I have an Ada JOHNSON, married to Thomas HINDS b. 1870 in Peru, NY. One son: Howard b. in VT. I have an Isaac JOHNSON m. to Betsey Weatherwax who died before 1830 possibly in Peru, NY. I have Richard JOHNSON m. to Hilda PRATT b. 1926 in Mount Holly, VT. I have other JOHNSONs in various parts of the country. Judy
Judy, My g.g.grandfather was James JOHNSTON, but the 't' was often dropped in census records and other records...becoming JOHNSON. He and his wife, Elizabeth (surname unknown) lived in Mooers and Champlain from at least 1844 until he moved to MN in 1871 or so. Elizabeth died in Mooers in 1859. James Johnston / Johnson was born in Ireland. I know nothing of his family other than that fact. Any connection to the JOHNSON family you're researching? Happy holidays.
