    3. > ~SMITH, John Lieutenant, commanded a blockhouse > manned by the sick at Plattsburgh. Does anyone have any more information about this man? John SMITH was the name of the father of my gt-gt-gt grandfather (Thomas Whitehead SMITH, b. NY 1795, d. IA 1877). This John SMITH and wife Ruth GILDERSLEEVE SMITH were living in Clinton Co. NY in the very early 1800s. Since "John Smith" is a very common name, I'm hesitant to pursue the Lieutenant without knowing (or at least strongly suspecting) that he was an ancestor of mine. 1. French Canadians @ Plattsburg 1814
    2. Jan J.
    3. "The Royal Navy had eleven gunboats, with more than half of the crews were French Canadian, under the command of Captain Roumzie: 'Yeo, Blucher, Drummond, Murray, Wellington, Bereford, Popham, Prevost, Simcoe, Beckwith and Brock'. The total crew for all Royal Navy vessels was believed to be just under one thousand. There was a decided advantage to the Royal Navy because of the superior range and throwing weight." American gunboats were: 'Borer, Centipede, Wilmer, Nettle, Allen, Viper, Burows, Ludlow, Alwyn, and Ballard.' The total crew for all the American vessels was believed to be over 800." 2. Mary Swanson
    3. Concerning my Irish great-great grandfather, James Johnston / Johnson (I have found both surname spellings in records since the "t" was often dropped)... James Johnston is buried in Minnesota having moved here with two of his sons around 1872 or 73. His wife Elizabeth (maiden not known) died in 1859 in Mooers and is buried in the Mooers old cemetery located in the town of Mooers. I haven't been able to find any other information concerning Elizabeth other than she was born in England abt 1820 according to the 1850 census. I have a photo of her gravestone but it doesn't mention her place of birth or parentage. Frustrating! Some of those buried in National Cemeteries are not yet included. So if you don't find someone via the site, do not panic. For example: Arlington is not included because is run by the Department of the Army. My gg uncle, Sydney Hare, from Clinton County (Peru) is buried at Arlington. Learned that from his pension record. We were in Washington, DC several years ago and actually visited the grave. Today his name didn't appear when I did a search, so after checking every possible spelling variation, did a bit more digging on the website. Then called Arlington which confirmed that they are not part of that system. Also, there are some national cemeteries that are not yet on this site, though their interred are listed on the cemetery's computer, and they'll do phone lookups. Daniel B. Hare, of Plattsburgh (son of Daniel and Susan Winch Hare) is buried at Antietam National Cemetery, but they are not yet part of the national online system. Years ago, I paid someone to peruse the "Roll of Honor" to check several graves. He gave me Daniel's information. When he was not listed on the national website, phoned Antietam--they looked on their system and found him. (Though there are been some readdressing of graves, so his grave number is not the same as what I was given from the "Roll of Honor" though the section numbers matched. What I'd really like is for someone to put the "Roll of Honor" online. Linda Guynup Dewey

    3. From the Kim Komando Electronic Newsletter: -> YOU CAN SEARCH ONLINE FOR VETERANS' BURIAL SITES The Department of Veterans Affairs has put the burial records of 3.2 million veterans online. They are buried in 120 national cemeteries and some state cemeteries. The records go back to the Civil War. However, nearly half of the Union dead from the Civil War are unidentified. If you are tracing an ancestor, the government has a search engine. You must know the last name. If you have more information, there is an advanced search available. Start your search at: http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1 I hope this is of interest to some. Edie in Maine

    2. Mary Swanson
    3. There seems to be several sources available for information concerning the French or French Canadian and English Canadian ancestors and settlers who made up a large portion of the population in Clinton Co. However, my family in Clinton Co. was Irish, having been born in Ireland about 1820. Few sources seem to be available on the Clinton Co. Irish. My great-great grandfather born in Ireland in 1820 was in Champlain, Clinton Co. by 1844 when his first child, Mary J. Johnston / Johnson (marr name Wingate) was born. My ancestor was Catholic and raised his children as Catholic although a couple of them left the church as adults. There do not seem to be marr records for those marr around 1842 / 1843 in Clinton Co. by a Catholic missionary traveling the circuit. There are no baptismal records for the children in this family, no obituaries that state the county in Ireland where my James Johnston / Johnson was born, etc. The lack of sources for the Clinton Co. Irish is so frustrating. They're enumerated in census records but only "Ireland" as a birthplace is mentioned. Can anyone offer any help? Thanks, Mary
