    3. Hi Harriet, Thank you for your email. Yes, I've searched the "Marriages in Clinton County" but did not find my g.g.grandparents listed. I think they would have been married by a traveling priest perhaps and records may not have been kept for those events. This is only a guess of course. The search continues...thank you for your suggestion however. 3. Going back some 40+ years when I worked for the NYS Health Dept, doing research with vital records, we considered "Upstate NY" as anywhere other than New York City. We would have labeled even Long Island as "Upstate" because the vital records were filed in Albany instead of NYC. Public Health Laws applied to all buy NYC. Today, casual talk would probably exclude Long Island, but officially Albany still keeps VR for Long Island. In Clinton/Essex we commonly call it "North Country", which is very imprecise. Burlington VT paper today used it to refer to northern Vermont. I would not know what Northern New York referred to, but would certainly not rule out Rochester and Buffalo. 2. I grew up in Clinton & Warren counties and now live in Bergen County, NJ, which borders on New York City and Upstate New York. It took me a while to realize that when they talked about "Upstate" NY -- which is really in southern NY -- on the news, etc., they were not referring to Northern NYS. Anyone searching for ancestors who came from Upstate NY should be looking in Westchester, Rockland, Orange, and perhaps Putnam and Dutchess counties. As Mac stated, Northern NY is not really a specific area of NY; I would consider anywhere north of where I lived in Warren County to be Northern NY, but that's just me. Michelle

    3. "Below is a partial list of the U.S. Navy crew, enlistment for 2 years, of the brig 'Eagle', 8 cannons long (18 lbs.) and 12 (32 lbs.) Carronades. It does not include the names of the prisoners from the American army stockade who were enlisted at the last minute to help man the vessel. Among musicians, the list only gives name of those who were killed, and not of the five men and one musician's wife who survived. Otherwise, the list may be of the original crew that boarded her upon launch that summer of 1814. The complement during the battle was 142. Of the 57 listed from this roster, 15 were killed and 20 were wounded, 4 were sick in the hospital on Crab Island, and 4 deserted. Those listed as 'marines' were actually army infantry afloat.
