    1. Re: [NYCLINTO-L] BEDELL, William & Seneca
    2. Judy VanArsdale
    3. Dear Susan, First of all, thank you so much for all your work. The information you've been putting on the list has been very interesting. I hope we don't give you "burn-out". I'm looking for William BEDELL, primarily. I know he is in "The Histories of Clinton and Franklin Counties, NY", but I've yet to be able to read what it says. I'm most interested in what church he was affilliated, but, frankly, any information will be greatly appreciated. If there are more than one, he's the preacher who lived in Plattsburg (or near there) around 1800 to about 1830. He also has a son named William, and I think there's another William in a separate part of the county. Seneca BEDELL is another of his sons. I thought he might stand out some since his first name is fairly uncommon. There are variations in the spelling "BEDELL", including "BEDLE", "BEEDLE", and "BEDEL". Thank you again, Judy

Because of the later book, if you give a request, please tell me the given name as well as surname. I have one hugh favor to ask. Please, no more than 2 Names per Request. I get soo many requests that, in order to be fair to everyone, and get more done, I MUST limit to number per request. You may send more than one request but I do first come, first serve. <G> It may take a little while to answer everyone's mail but I will do my best. Have fun and See you on the internet. <G> Oh, also, as an afterthought, if you do not see messages posted right away on the list, it is because my SERVER is acting up. 2. Steven & Ann Mensch
    3. Hi, I am not an expert, but in my research, I have found that the dates reported for the establishment of a church may vary for several reasons. Some parishes may develop rather quickly, as a town with the coming of the railroad may have had a large jump in population very quickly. Other parishes may develop slowly - A few people may move to an area where there is no settlement/town...These people may request a priest or missionary to visit, or a priest or missionary may come across them during their travels, and minister to their spiritual needs....These people may set about building a church building right away, and yet, not have a resident pastor...Or, the population and needs of the area may prompt a priest or missionary to locate to the area before a church building is there, and the priest may organize the building of the church himself - If the latter is the case, there would likely be sacramental records prior to the building of the church, since there would likely be baptisms, marriages, and deaths during that interim... There are different types of records which are kept, for example, sacramental records, financial records, building records, land records, etc. One author may be looking at the records for the actual building of the church, and using that as the date of establishment; another may be using the dates of the first sacramental records for members of the congregation (which could have been kept locally, or at a parish which a visiting priest called home); yet another could use the date that a parish church first had it's own resident pastor, rather than a visiting pastor. In other words, there is some degree of interpretation involved when using the information contained in the many different types of records, and assessing which of the different stages, in the development of a parish, to call "established". I hope this makes sense and is helpful to you. Respectfully, --Ann Mensch +Local Catholic Church History and Genealogy Research Guide and Worldwide Directory http://home.att.net/~Local_Catholic/ [email protected] wrote: > What I find interesting and a mystery is that my grandfather was born in 1882 > and I have the records of St Josephs church in Dannemora N.Y. where he was > baptised, Aug , 1882. 2. What I find interesting and a mystery is that my grandfather was born in 1882 and I have the records of St Josephs church in Dannemora N.Y. where he was baptised, Aug , 1882. This summer while visiting I too discovered that the church was not established until 1883. Can anyone explain?? Margo

    3. Marge, I found a book at the DAR Library in Washington, D.C., "Tombstone Inscriptions From Selected Cemeteries of Clinton County, New York", compiled by Margaret Hunt, July 1967-1968. It had several pages of Riverside County tombstone inscriptions. Unfortunately that is not a page that I copied. If you called the DAR Library I'm sure that they would copy what you needed (for a fee). Also in the introduction she wrote that she had previously completed compiling the book "Tombstone Inscriptions from Riverside Cemetery, Plattsburg, NY". I am not sure if the library also had this book or not as I only looked at the first one and it was quite by accident that I found it about 20 minutes before the library closed. Hope this helps.
