The only thing I found in state records was Elijah WHITE's deed, where his children sold his property after he died in 1877, but I had to give them the exact page number, etc. in order to have them copy it. They would not search for it. New York has got to be one of the worst state for vital records and to search in. I found where Elijah was buried, by writing to a Mrs. Zaumetzger who sent me some info on Elijah's grave. Luckily, I found where Elijah, Jr. came from Whiting, VT and that he was born in MA, (from his father's rev war papers.) When I got into the MA. sites, I found tons of info on Elijah Jr, Elijah Sr and Sr's parents. I wish all states were like MA. Almost all of Elijah WHITE, Jr's info in NY came from lookups that kind people did for me or from the BABBITT Family Assoc. and Book. marykell

    3. Marge, When you make a request to Albany or Plattsburgh, just put down Clinton County if you are sure that this was the county where he died. Also, if you have the date and access to a good library or from the LDS, check the newspapers of Clinton County for that time period. You may find a death or funeral notice. Then you may even be able to find that the funeral home that was used is still in business and get information from their records. That would be great. Just realize, when you write to Albany, it will be at least 6 months before you get an answer back from them. 3. Hi Margo, You would think that the date 1882, Albany would have the record. They state from 1880 on it was mandatory. If the death took place up in Clinton County, What about the McLellan Cemetery Index? I have found some interesting information I knew nothing about on those indexes. The only way it will not be listed, so they say, is, if they were buried on a private cemetery or plot. These are for public cemeteries only. 3. Hi Thomas, Lucky you. Must have been your accent. :-D They wouldn't even talk to me. They couldn't figure out if I was a Yankee or one of them "Damn Southerners". I guess I am a cross. :-D Born and raised NH and lived now for 34 years in Florida. Can't quite make up my mind which I am. Anyway, I came armed to the teeth to Plattsburgh with everything but the documents of the 1800s. That is what I have been searching for. Found 1 will through a distant cousin but, with the name like Roberts, you need those doc's to prove parentage and marriage. Otherwise, the names in the will are meaningless. How many John Roberts have you tried searching for just in NY? It is worse than Jones or Morgan down South. Done both of those. I think we genealogists ought to do as they are doing in Canada in regards to release of their census records. They have bombarded their congressmen to release them. We should be able to go to our local town or county clerk, order any document from any state or country and get those documents. We would pay our own clerks the money and save all the hassle and hair pulling. Wouldn't that be a dream come true? You have a nice evening and will talk with you again. 3. Hi Marykell, I know exactly what you mean. The White surname is as bad as my Roberts surname. I the the will of one of my Roberts who moved from VT to NY. He mentions his children by name 5-6 times during the will but that does not prove your relative is the son being spoken off in the will. Without some kind of paper that states who the parents were, the will is only for intestesting reading. I know it is a direct relative but DAR does not. I even have the application of a cousin whose relative into the Roberts line was the sister of my elusive Roberts. again, without the parentage of my line, who is to say I am correct. Could go bald pulling my hair out on this family. Like you said, the records from VT and MA were easy even though the dates were much earlier. If I wasn't such a nice lady, :-) I would go up to NY and wring a few necks. <G> I am working up in Canada for the moment to close up a few loose documents on my Richardson line and then I will have all the documents back to the Rev. War. No doubting if I am right or wrong on this line. Talk with you later and good luck. Sure wish I had a crystal ball. Maybe I could find some of your loose ends for you. 1. [NYCLINTO-L] Vital Records Books for Clinton County
    2. Sue Jones
    3. Hi List, I am just curious about one thing. Does Clinton County or any of the towns in the county, maintain vital records books as do other counties and towns in other states? I am looking for records but apparently the actual records do not exist. I have just received copies from Vital Record books for both Attleboro and Norton, Mass. for the birth and marriage of a Rev. War relative. As you can tell, these records are for the 1700s. I am searching for only the 1800s in Clinton County. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have already written to the State, County and Town in which the events took place. Paid a lot of money for nothing. I know it was not required until 1880 or 1881 but the same holds true for Mass. and other states, yet I can get vital records from them. Sue [email protected]

This is, more or less, just an index or listing of the event, but it may prove that they were indeed married there and on that date. Spellings are typed as they appear on the pages. 2. Sue Jones
    3. Hello List, Before I post any of the newspaper info for the Morning Telegram on the surnames I was researching. I need to know if it permissible to do so. I received all this information months ago from a person who does this research on the Clinton County genweb site. There is a charge for this information to receive it from him. If I should not put the information I received on the following surnames, I will not post it to this list. The surnames I received some kind of information on were: DUFF, BEMAN, HARRIS, MCINTYRE, ROBERTS. All these surnames are in my family lineage and at one time or another, living in Clinton County. That is why I ordered the Morning Telegram Newspaper notices. Thank-you for your advice. I do not want to get into trouble or make anyone mad by posting something I shouldn't. Sue [email protected]

    1. [NYCLINTO-L] Date for Charles Arthur
    2. SLWillig
    3. Happy 2000, Listers... Thought for sure I had a date of death for Dr. Charles Winslow Arthur of Keeseville. He was the son of Joshua Van Rensselaer Arthur and Almira Lake... lived an practiced medicine right there in Clinton County. Born in 1844. I could have sworn his body was interred right there in Evergreen Cemetery in Keeseville in my family's plot. Was sure I had the death date recorded, too, but it is nowhere to be found. Does anyone happen to know what that date might have been? Have checked Ancestry.com, the LDS site and Family Tree Maker to no avail. Thanks, everyone. Susan Willig

    2. Sue Jones
    3. Hi List, I know that this posting will be old to some of you but I am hoping there are enough new people on the list now to re-post my search on documents of my Roberts Family of Clinton County, NY. I have tried in vain to find these documents and as far as their religion goes, I believe they were all Protestants but do not know what denomination. 1. Darwin Robert born 1847 in Plattsburgh, Clinton, NY d. Apr. 15, 1915 Tyngsboro, Middlesex, MA m. Jan. 1, 1869 Plattsburgh, Clinton, NY. I have his death certificate. I am looking for his birth and marriage. spouse: Martha Amarilla Harris born Nov. 14, 1846 Plattsburgh, Clinton, NY (Parents: James Harris & Sarah Eliza McIntyre) I also need her birth certificate 2. John C. Roberts b. 1812 in Plattsburgh, Clinton, NY m. abt. 1846 Plattsburgh d. unknown but after 1855. (Parents: Joseph Roberts & Sarah Beman) I need all his documents. spouse: Harriet Stockwell - only information is she may have been born in Braintree, VT. 3. Joseph Roberts b. Oct. 24, 1776 in Vermont m. unknown , possibly in Vermont d. May 27, 1855 Plattsburgh, Clinton, NY. Need death certificate and possible marriage, if in NY (Parents: Peter Roberts & Jane Baker) spouse: Sarah Beman b. 1772 Brimfield, Mass. d. Nov. 12, 1837 Plattsburgh, Clinton, NY (Parents: Samuel Beman & Sibbil Thompson) Need her death certificate. Thank-you for all your help. Hope to be of help to others of this line in the near future. FHC does not have any of the information needed. Must have the Docs. for DAR. Up to this part of my lineage, it is not available with DAR and the chapter I am joining does not accept older lineage presented to them. They say there are too many errors in the lineal packets to accept them as fact. Sue in Fl. [email protected]

    1. Re: [NYCLINTO-L] Birth and death certs. for "Un-named" child
    2. Birth and death certificates, even in 1895, simply didn't exist in some areas of Clinton County even though they were "required" by the State of New York. For example, my great great grandmother, Lydia Butler Guynup, died in 1894 and no death certificate could be found at either the state or town levels. I've found far more pre-1900 birth and death information in the PLATTSBURGH REPUBLICAN, or in church records, than in the state or various town files. Many cemeteries were actually on family land (at least two that I know of in my own family) so there was no reason to involve the authorities, especially in the case of infant deaths. 3. Susan, I work in Medical Records at our local hospital and we are responsible for birth certificates. NYS requires a birth certificate for a baby who is alive at birth. Thus is the baby died shortly after birth, i.e. 1 hour old, we would complete a birth certificate. If the baby was stillborn, there is no birth certificate completed. In this case, I believe the physician must file a record of death, though it might be slightly different than a regular death certificate. Hope this helps. 2. Sue, I don't think NY required birth and death registration until 1920, and even then, my mother was born in Essex Co and her birth was not registered until she needed a birth certificate 20 some years later. My great grandmother had a baby who died right after birth and was buried on the farm, nothing recorded except in the family Bible. You may be out of luck unless there is a Bible somewhere recording the baby's birth and death.
