He married Jerusha ______ (maiden name unknown) circa 1759. Their children were: Lydia b: June 25, 1760, Elijah (Sr) b: Sept. 4, 1762, Jerusha b: July 21, 1764, Child born and died July 8, 1766, Nathan (Sr) b: June 26, 1767, Sarah b: March 31, 1771 and Jonathan b: Sept. 25, 1774. All children born in Wrentham, MA. William and Jerusha are both buried in West Medway Cemetery, Medway, MA. Their son Elijah (Sr) m: Betsey WISWELL and they removed to Whiting, VT, where they are both buried. Their son, Elijah (Jr) m: Deborah BABBITT in Whiting and removed to Black Brook, AuSable Forks, NY. Do any of these connect with your WHITE's? I have William and Jerusha's, Elijah (Sr.) and Betsey's and Elijah (Jr) and Deborah's children, with dates and who they married. Would love to know where Deborah BABBITT was born and where she is buried. Elijah and his second wife, Nancy SPAULDING are buried in AuSable Forks, NY. Elijah and Deborah had a son, James WHITE, born Sept. 19, 1827, in VT(?) [email protected]
Hi, Sue, In going through some of my paperwork, I came across the original info you sent me - with my notes re Town of Plattsburgh attached!! I have been following your posts about your frustation with locating records. I am not sure if this is a number you have tried already, but here goes. Town Supervisor's Office Town of Plattsburgh 151 Banker Rd. Plattsburgh, NJ 12901 (518) 563-8101 Since Beekmantown is Town of Plattsburgh, and Alfred's death certificate indicates he died there, perhaps the baby did too. And in that timeframe, the baby was probably born at home as well. I saw where you contacted the Town of Black Brook offices, but that covers part of Morrisonville, but not Beekmantown. Good luck and keep me posted on your progress. -- Candy_B [email protected] Researching Bennett, Cooper, Vanderveer, Woolley & related families in NJ Researching O'Brien, Brown, Boyle, Cavanaugh, Noonan, Fitzgerald, Spellman, Messier (Macey), LaCroix (Cross), Blais (Blair), Durand, Simonneau, Chabbot (Jabbot, Jabaut), Boucher, Sharron and related families in NY, New England and Quebec
Ok, if I remember. I don't anticipate being in Plattsburg until late spring, early summer. Tom Sue Jones wrote: > Hi Thomas, > > May I as you a favor? Hi Thomas, May I as you a favor? If you are ever in the Clinton County area, could you look at these ledgers and try and find the births and marriages for two couples? They are on father and son. I am trying to find the birth of John C. Roberts of Plattsburgh. He was born 1812. His parents were Joseph Roberts and Sarah Beman. He married Harriet Stockwell supposedly in Plattsburgh about 1846. Then I am looking for the same information on John's son, Darwin. Darwin Roberts was born in 1847 in Plattsburgh and married Martha Amailla Harris on Jan. 1, 1869. I have been searching without any success for these documents and no one either has them or will help. If it is some help to you, they were all Protestants that did not adhere to any one particular denomination. They went to whatever church was closest at the time. Thank-you for any and all assistance. If you are able to get any document please let me know your address and the cost so I can pay you. Sue Jones -----Original Message----- From: Thomas W. Margo and Pat, I don't know if Saranac has a town clerk or records, but if it does checking there might help. My family was apparently from the area of Plattsburg that became Saranac. When my nephew (who has the genealogy bug) visited the settlements in the southern part of the country he was told at the museum that the Puritans and colonists kept such excellent records that is why the settlements in the north got much more coverage in the history books. The settlements in the south were not as well documented. Today we see it as a north/south political issue and some people think history has favored the Pilgrims and Puritans etc. but it was originally largely due to the record keeping. Jean in Haverhill
Hi Margo, I am having the same problem. I know Dannemora was where my family came from but I have found nothing. I have gone to Altona, Ellenburg, Ellenburg Center, and Plattsburgh to find things. I found them in West Chazy at St. Joseph's. You might inquire there. The town clerk was not helpful to me either. The Rolland name is not familiar to me but that doesn't mean anything. If he was in a TB sanitorium, it is most likely that he was in Franklin county. There was the Trudeau Institute, Will Rogers Hospital and other cure homes in the area. It was a huge TB mecca in the early part of the century. St. Peter's Church has been helpful to me. It is hard, it seems they are unwilling to extend beyond what they have to do up there. Surrogate Court records are for the whole county. There are two ledgers which contain a "roughly" alphabetical index for those who are deceased from the 1790's to the present time. The same ledger is for those who died with a will and those who did not. In St. Lawrence County, for example, there are separate ledgers for those who died testate and intestate. These ledgers give the death date and administrative dates. The actual probate documents are filed elsewhere in the room, in small steel containers, by first letter of the last name, and then by date. These usually contain the petition, which is useful for genealogists because it has the names of living relatives, and the estate inventory, which I always find fascinating. The will, if any, is retyped and inserted into a will book. In St. Lawrence County, the will, or a handwritten copy of it (before the advent of typewriters) is filed with the rest of the probate documents. In modern times, survivors of a deceased person in St. Lawrence County are asked to fill out a genealogical chart going back a couple of generations and forward three or so generations from the deceased. Now ain't that wonderful! For TB deaths, I would check Saranac Lake records. Maybe he died at the Trudeau Sanitarium (of which Doonesbury Creator Gary Trudeau is a descendant). I believe that Saranac probates were handled by Clinton County Surrogate Court but wouldn't want to say so emphatically without checking a map. By the way, I found the people at the Surrogate Court office very pleasant to deal with and very helpful. tom [email protected] wrote: > To Thomas , Were those death records you found in Plattsburg Probate Court > for all of Clinton County. Hello Margo, You might want to look in Franklin and Essex counties in NY. The sanitoriums for TB were up in that area mostly. I have seen names of people(patients) on the census records. It might be a start. If you know what church he was asociated with, you might write them. I have a list of churchs in the area if you are interested. :o) Pat -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Tuesday, January 04, 2000 4:36 PM Subject: Re: [NYCLINTO-L] Vital Records Books for Clinton County >To Thomas , Were those death records you found in Plattsburg Probate Court >for all of Clinton County. Thank you for your reply. In answer to your question, I did check the McLallan records and I went to Albany for the record of William Rolland(my Gr- grandfather) I even made a trip to Dannamora this summer to the town hall and they did not have birth or any other records and I do have their church records in that town. They did not have any of my family records there and I know my grandfather and his sisters were born there because of church records and my grandfathers death record. The records were not good at all. thanks Margo

The surname I am looking for is William Rolland. He died between 1885-1887 in the Clinton County area. His father was Levi Rolland and I have a record stating his father was from Canada, no town recorded. Thanks, Margo
I recently visited the Surrogate Court's (Probate Court) offices in Plattsburgh, and was able to find some records of deceased ancestors. Unfortunately, not the ones I really wanted to find, but nevertheless useful. The records there go back to the late 1790's but are not complete with respect to all deaths in the County. In my limited experience, the probate records in St. Lawrence County were better organized and kept.
Hi MaryKell, Saw your post. I am from this area originally and found it difficult also. I do have White's in my family. Email me and I will see if I can help. << If the death took place up in Clinton County, What about the McLellan Cemetery Index? I have found some interesting information I knew nothing about on those indexes. The only way it will not be listed, so they say, is, if they were buried on a private cemetery or plot. These are for public cemeteries only. >> Many of those listed in the McLellan survey are private cemeteries. You don't realize HOW private until you search for one for several hours, driving and up and down a country road in Beekmantown. I finally realized that the there a tall slab leaning against a tree was the only stone still "standing" in the cemetery. All the others--probably 15 or 20--were on the ground, most broken. Cemetery is truly on its way back to nature. Linda Guynup Dewey San Francisco
To Thomas , Were those death records you found in Plattsburg Probate Court for all of Clinton County. I am looking for the death of my gr-grandfather who died of TB around 1885 in Clinton County but I do not know where he died. His wife and children were in Dannemora at the time but he did not die there. Any suggestion? Margo
New York State is a tough one to get records. I to know my Grandfather was born there in Clinton County in 1882 and the State has no records on his birth or his sisters or his mothers second marriage. I know it all happened there because I have the church records. Unfortunately I can not find my Gr Grandfathers death record anywhere in NY state. Margo
Apparently the kinds of published records were not done in Clinton County (as they were in Massachusetts). One of the problems is that town clerks are not consistently cooperative. I've phoned several town or village clerks and someone has actually gotten books from the vault and read the information to me. (In one case I'd written, but had no response. The clerk did not have a photocopy mahine so read the stuff to me while she was having lunch. She read a bit, I wrote while she had a few bites.) A great Plattsbrugh friend who has been of enormous help in my research took flowers, candy and dug out a driveway to get on the good side of one town clerk. Finally, one afternoon she allowed him to go through death volumes which in some cases listed the deceased parents. (Or the names that the surviviors had given as parents.) In many cases, town clerks find genealogy projects to be terribly time-consuming, and are on a low priority as compared to parking meters and stop lights. Linda
