    2. Linda, Do you have any information on the family of my great-grandmother Elizabeth Vere Rolland Guynup? Married to Charles Agustus Guynup. I know here parents were from the Clinton County area but do not have nay more on them. Also does anyone know if the name Vere is a dit name for Viens? I keep going back and forth finding these names in that research and wondered if they are one in the same. Thank You, Margo

    2. Realize this is probably too obvious a suggestion, but since you have the death dates, have you tried ordering microfilms of newspapers through Inter-Library Loan, and reading the papers yourself? It's not hard; it just requires some time at a microfilm machine. Your library's eference department probably has a volume that lists newspapers on microfilm. (If they don't, call or write the Plattsburgh Public Library and ask them to tell you what reels to order.) You can order reels for the appropriate period. A few years ago, I started with the earliest papers available for Plattsburgh, and ordered several reels (a pre-PLATTSBURGH REPUBLICAN paper). Because the papers were so small a reel was several years' worth of editions. Found an amazing amount of information, including a great deal of information not listed in 10,000 VITALS... Also, have you written to Dick Ward? He's been reading papers on microfilm for many years, culling the information for his card file. Linda

    1. [NYCLINTO-L] Plattsburgh FMEC - 1897
    2. Mark D. Aubrey
    3. >From the book: The Souvenir Industrial Edition of Plattsburgh 1897 edited and published by W. Lansing & Son, Plattsburgh page 29 First Methodist Episcopal Church The First Methodist Episcopal Church of Plattsburgh, whose commodious house of worship stands at the head of Clinton street, on Oak street, began its existence as what in Methodist parlance is known as a "station," in distinction from a "circuit," in the spring of 1826. There had been a Methodist "class" and classes in Plattsburgh for many years before this date, but up to this time, Plattsburgh had been one of many other contiguous towns forming part of a "circuit," which the itinerant preachers reached from time to time in their rounds. In 1826, the Plattsburgh classes were organized by themselves alone, and made a "station," and the Rev. James Quinlan was appointed pastor. From that time to 1886, eleven years ago, twenty-nine different men have been its pastors, three of them, Rev. A. Witherspoon, D.D., Rev. John E. Bowen, and Dr. Cheeseman, being appointed to a second pastorate. Within the eleven years last past the pastors have been as follows: 1886 and 1887, Rev. Charles Reynolds; 1887, 1888, 1889, 1890, Rev. George A. Barrett; 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894, Rev. E. P. Stevens; 1895 and 1896, Rev. J. W. Eaton, D.D., the present incumbent. The church edifice, into which the society came more than eleven years ago, when it left its old building on Court street, is one of the finest and best of the Methodist Episcopal or any other denomination in Northern New York, and all its appointments, from audience room to kitchen, are commodious and elegant. The organ, which stands behind the pulpit, is unsurpassed in all this region, and the quartette choir, under the direction of Miss Alice Hewitt, organist, and composed of Misses Evelyn Bromley and Katherine Dana, soprano and alto, and Messrs. Haynes and Guibord, tenor and bass, furnished most excellent music for the large and intelligent congregation. The parsonage is at 37 Court street, and is a snug brick house, which makes a pleasant home for the pastor. The value of the parsonage as now estimated by the trustees, is $4,000, and that of the church building, $60,000. The present officers of the church, are as follows, viz.: Trustees, Hon. A. Williams, president of the boards; W. F. Davidson, clerk; D. S. Robinson, J. H. Carter, C. McDougall, H. H. Sherman, Hon. L. L. Shedden, Hon. A. Guibord and S. L. Wheeler, Esq. Stewards, L. D. Larkin, H. H. Jones, H. W. Guibord, O. T. Larkin, J. L. Signor, G. H. Anderson, W. C. Pike, C. C. Hodges, H. A. Wood, E. White, R. H. Guibord, C. J. Dale, and Dr. J. G. McKinney. Leaders, Frances Lewis, Lydia Arnold, Sarah Arnold, Caroline Stave, Alice Davidson, and Mary E. Craig: Sunday School Superintendent, S. L. Wheeler. Local Preacher, B. S. Cramer. President Epworth League, B. S. Cramer. The above named officers, together with Presiding Elder Rev. George Barrett and the pastor constitute the governing body of the local church. The present membership of the church is nearly 400. The pews are not rented but are assigned to permanent attendants, and yet all pews are free and the public are cordially invited to occupy them. The financial plan is that of weekly free-will offerings. The Sunday school and Epworth League are large and prosperous. ----- Mark Aubrey [email protected]

    2. Mark D. Aubrey
    3. >From the book: The Souvenier Industrial Edition of Plattsburgh 1897 edited and published by W. Lansing & Son, Plattsburgh page 33 Cemeteries Mount Carmel Cemetery Mount Carmel Catholic cemetery is a corporation organized by special act of the legislature in 1895. It contains eighteen acres of land, prettily laid out with potted plants and flower beds, and is situated on the south bank of the Saranac river one mile south of the village. The lots are sixteen feet square; those in desirable parts being sold and other devoted by the trustees free of charge to needy persons. The board of trustees consists of: President, Rev. T. E. Walsh; Hon. J. B. Riley, W. T. Burleigh, Frank McCadden, T. B. Cotter and M. J. Smith; Treasurer, Michael Smith; Secretary, T. B. Cotter. Riverside Cemetery Riverside cemetery is the Protestant burial place, and is situated about half a mile south of the village. It was the first cemetery laid out in Plattsburgh, and among its tombs may be found some of those erected to mark the last resting place of the first settlers of the village. There are also many monuments which have withstood the ravages of the hand of time, marking the graves of those who were killed in in action at the battle of Plattsburgh in 1815. The lot contains about ten acres, and is under the management of a board of trustees, composed of Benjamin Turner, president; and J. B. White and A. W. Baker. The Catholic Cemetery The old Catholic cemetery is part of the Mount Carmel cemetery property and under the same supervision and control. The board of trustees has discontinued the sale of lots, but any that are unoccupied are devoted to the interment of the needy. Lots in both of these cemeteries are cared for by the trustees. Jewish Cemetery The Jewish cemetery is about one and a quarter miles south of the village and adjoins the Mount Carmel cemetery. The ground was purchased by William Cane, in 1857, and presented to the Beth-Isreal Synagogue as a burial place for the Jewish congregation. It is 320 feet square, and about 125 interments have taken place. There are several handsome monuments erected to the memory of the departed, among which may be mentioned those of Cane, Miller, Spear, and Levy. The cemetery is under the supervision of a board of trustees, composed of William M. Levy, M. Schneeberg, and Julius Mendelssohn. ----------- Mark Aubrey [email protected]

    3. Hello, Listers. With the beginning of the New Year, I felt that it was time to dust off my Clinton Co. names and hope to make contact with others. John Snell and family moved from Castleton, VT between 1810 and 1820 to Jay, NY. His son, David, married, ca 1830 to Jane Marie Bragg in Peru, NY. They had several children, including my ancestor, Otis. David lied about his age (he was in his late 50's)to serve as replacement soldier in the Civil War and died shortly thereafter in Virginia. Any leads or contacts greatly appreciated! Ruth, in Lansing, MI
