    1. [NYCLINTO-L] STEBBINS; Champlain, NY
    2. Cheryl DaSilva
    3. Good morning! I am new to this list and was hoping I could take advantage of all the knowledge about Clinton County that must abound here. I am looking for my proverbial needle in a haystack. This is my brickwall: My great grandfather's (Felix STEBBINS) death certifcate listed his parents as Joseph STEBBINS and Marie LAVALLE both born in Champlain. My grandfather's date of birth is 1879 in Chicopee, MA. That would make his parents born in the late 1850s to mid 1860s (my assumption). I called the Champlain town clerk and was informed that NY state did not mandate recording of births till 1881. He did look through the parish records he had, but no STEBBINS. I also do not know if these people married in NY or not. Ok list, any ideas on how I would proceed? This is my first search attempt in New York. Do these names appear in anybody else's research? I contacted the Stebbins Ancestral Society and of the 60,000 names they have, none fit the name and time frame I need. HELP! Regards, Cheryl

    2. Did you check IGI? There is a Joseph Stebbins in 1840 in Chicopee; his father is Seth Stebbins. The mother's name might be Chopin or Chapin. Jean

    2. Hi Cheryl, Here is what I have in my Gedcom - I tie in at number 11 under Sanscartier which is really Lague dit Sanscartier which became Lahue in NY, go figure. NOTE the marriages to Legrain dit Lavallee in the data below. Had a quick look at the LDS site and they have lots of data on Stebenne and Lavallee but not the two together but worth trying a search there http://32.96.111.13/default.asp Once you have reviewed the info below, let me know how you think it might tie in. Regards, Andree Descendants of John Stebbins Generation No. 1 1. JOHN1 STEBBINS was born 1625 in Bocking, Essex, England, and died March 07, 1677/78 in Northampton, MA. He married MARY ANNE MUNSON. Child of JOHN STEBBINS and MARY MUNSON is: 2. i. JOHN2 STEBBENS, b. January 28, 1646/47, Springfield, Massachusetts; d. December 19, 1724, Deerfield, Massachusetts. Generation No. 2 2. JOHN2 STEBBENS (JOHN1 STEBBINS) was born January 28, 1646/47 in Springfield, Massachusetts, and died December 19, 1724 in Deerfield, Massachusetts. He married DOROTHY ALEXANDER January 04, 1679/80 in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Notes for JOHN STEBBENS: In 1723 John Stebbins died. In his will he wrote: "And as to my children in canada, to wit Samuel, Ebenezer, Joseph, Abigail and Thankful my will is...That each of them have an eighth part of my lands provided they come and live in New England." Sore at their continued absence he said: "Those that will not live in New England shall have five shillings apiece and no more...Yet be it forever understood that if my daughter Abigail come not and tarry as above said, then Aaron Denieur, her son shall be my heir in her room and stead, provided said Aaron continue in the country. After my decease and my wife's decease, said Aaron shall enter upon that which should have been his mother's part, and possess it until his mother comes, but if she come not and fulfill the above said conditions, and Aaron stays in New England and doth fulfill them, then the said eighth part of my lands to descend to said Aaron's heirs forever." Aaron received the lands, but Abigail came and tarried awhile; long enough to give birth to her thirteenth child and doubtless to receive her five shillings. Notes for ABIGAIL STEBENNE: Abigail was baptized as a catholic in 1708 and took on the name of Marguerite. She had arrived in Boucherville with her husband in March of 1704 shortly before the massacre occured in her home town of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Some of her family members were taken captive and brought to Quebec as a result of that skirmish. As Abigail was married to a french-canadian and resided there her family received preferential treatment and they were released and went to live with Abigail. They also integrated into the french canadian society and forged a life in Quebec. In July of 1708 Marguerite was granted 75 "arpents" on "la cote" St-Joseph in Boucherville. She returned home to Quebec with her new infant but not her son. 4. He married ANNA COMBS July 08, 1730 in Greenfield, Franklin, Massachusetts. Notes for RENE DENOYON: When Rene, the eldest child, was about ten years old he was sent with some Frenchmen and Indians to visit his grandparents in Deerfield, and when the Canadians were ready to go back the child could not be found. Perhaps grandfather Stebbins induced him to stay, but stay he did and in New England he founded not only a family but a name, for his name changed from Rene de Noyon to Aaron Denio. He was a soldier in the Three Year's War. In 1730 the General Court granted him two hundred acres "in consideration of his losses and sufferings in the War with the Indians and French and in his captivity among them." He, a child born in his father's own land could hardly be called a captive! He and his father may have fought as enemies in this war for Samuel Dickinson, a Northfield captive, returning in 1724 by way of Albany said that "Denion", a French man (well known in New England) was in the army at Northfield last fall." 2. Hi Cheryl, I have Stebbins in my tree - mine did not go (I don't think!) to NY - they are in Quebec BUT the name is spelled STEBENNE there. Are you aware of the story of their capture in Deerfield MA, in 1704 where they were taken prisoner, brought to Quebec, stayed and had families? Since you stated he married a Marie Lavallee I would strongly feel you need to look in Quebec for your ancestors. If you think this might be worth pursuing I have church records for their parish I can look at as well as names and dates of the Stebenne families. Contact me if you want these. Regards, Andree

    2. Would you be able to provide more information from the book Notable Men of Clinton County. I would be interested in the early settlers and any who were there before 1798. I am looking for Oliver Sanders, in particular, but I lose him about 1798 and thought if I knew some of the other persons who were in the area, like Newton Ransom etc., I might be able to find his family members. 3. Please keep this information on line as I have been trying to find out information about my husband's great grandmother. The talk in the family was that she was a "full blooded Indian" but on her death certificate it stated that she was born in Cadyville, NY. Everywhere that I find her there is a different maiden name, I have found her listed as Arpin and also Harper. Any information would be very helpful as Margaret Arpin or Harper born March 27, 1861, is my brick wall on my husband's side. Regards, Joanne Borden

    3. Hi, List... Does anybody have or know where I can find a photograph of the old Keeseville Academy? Not only did several generations of my relatives go to school there, but one of then was a teacher there as well. It would be nice to be able to add such a photo to the family history. And cemeteries - tried McLellan and didn't find at least two of the ARTHUR burials that should be there in Plattsburgh. One if for Dr. CHARLES WINSLOW ARTHUR and the other was for his daughter, SUSAN E. ARTHUR. The only thing left is to try the two Catholic cemeteries. Does someone have the contact information for them, please? (At least I think there are only two Catholic cemeteries in Plattsburgh. Right?) Thanks, all... 2. Try contacting Michael Burgess at Special collections at The Feinberg Library 2 draper Ave. Plattsburgh NY 12901. I found listings on the NY site of cemeteries and this is who to contact for copies.

    3. To the best of my knowledge, the two primary deeded Indian reserves in our neighborhood in the 19th Century were the Mohawks at St Regis & Hogansburg, on the Canadian border near Malone, NY and the Caughnawaga, on the other (South) side of the river from Montreal. >From time to time individual Indians would establish hunting/trapping camps in various parts of the Adirondacks and their foothills. But to the best of my knowledge, there were no other reservations in the Adirondack area until modern times. (there is currently a small reserve on the Military Turnpike between Plattsburgh and Ellenburg, but this was established late in the 20th Century) I'm unfamliar with the Abenaki history, so it's possible that there was some later migration from Vermont or Mohicans from Connecticut & Massachusetts. But no reservations.

    2. Hello Joyce, seems we are traveling the same path here. I have my allusive grgrgrandmother that was born in Montreal in abt. 1824 she lived at Hogansburg for a time with her parents when she was widowed in 1850 and although I have her parents Louis Sawyer (listed as a Frenchman from Canada) and his wife Mary, that is where it all stops. So I have sent thro my local library for varies books on diff. counties in Que. and Ont. as she lived in Maitland Ont. also before she was widowed. She had two Warner children from her married to a Andrew Warner, no info., and she later remarried a Frank Robideau and had several more children, but to find anyone its something. I also am trying for any maps and have a few, diff. time period. I have been trying to pin point reservations in route to Montreal and your letter has helped. I would be glad to share any info. with you. 3. Yes, the table of contents are as follow: Prelude 1900-1909 Page 2-3 1910-1919 Pages 4 -9 1920-1929 Pages 10-18 1930-1939 Pages 19-27 1940-1949 Pages 37-46 1950-1959 Pages 47-54 1960-1969 Pages 55-65 1970-1979 Pages 66-74 1980-1989 Pages 75-82 1990-1999 Pages 83-96 It is a short synopsis of the North Country, but I think worthwhile. I used to live in Ausauble Forks just after the Second World War until 1951, when my father died. We then moved to the lower part of NYS. Jim In the book it mentions how the whole downtown of Ausable Forks burnt down.
