    1. [NYCLINTO-L] First Methodist Episcopal Church of Plattsburgh
    2. Mark D. Aubrey
    3. >From the book: The Souvenir Industrial Edition of Plattsburgh 1897 edited and published by W. Lansing & Son, Plattsburgh page 29 First Methodist Episcopal Church The First Methodist Episcopal Church of Plattsburgh, whose commodious house of worship stands at the head of Clinton street, on Oak street, began its existence as what in Methodist parlance is known as a "station," in distinction from a "circuit," in the spring of 1826. There had been a Methodist "class" and classes in Plattsburgh for many years before this date, but up to this time, Plattsburgh had been one of many other contiguous towns forming part of a "circuit," which the itinerant preachers reached from time to time in their rounds. In 1826, the Plattsburgh classes were organized by themselves alone, and made a "station," and the Rev. James Quinlan was appointed pastor. From that time to 1886, eleven years ago, twenty-nine different men have been its pastors, three of them, Rev. A. Witherspoon, D.D., Rev. John E. Bowen, and Dr. Cheeseman, being appointed to a second pastorate. Within the eleven years last past the pastors have been as follows: 1886 and 1887, Rev. Charles Reynolds; 1887, 1888, 1889, 1890, Rev. George A. Barrett; 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894, Rev. E. P. Stevens; 1895 and 1896, Rev. J. W. Eaton, D.D., the present incumbent. The church edifice, into which the society came more than eleven years ago, when it left its old building on Court street, is one of the finest and best of the Methodist Episcopal or any other denomination in Northern New York, and all its appointments, from audience room to kitchen, are commodious and elegant. The organ, which stands behind the pulpit, is unsurpassed in all this region, and the quartette choir, under the direction of Miss Alice Hewitt, organist, and composed of Misses Evelyn Bromley and Katherine Dana, soprano and alto, and Messrs. Haynes and Guibord, tenor and bass, furnished most excellent music for the large and intelligent congregation. The parsonage is at 37 Court street, and is a snug brick house, which makes a pleasant home for the pastor. The value of the parsonage as now estimated by the trustees, is $4,000, and that of the church building, $60,000. The present officers of the church, are as follows, viz.: Trustees, Hon. A. Williams, president of the boards; W. F. Davidson, clerk; D. S. Robinson, J. H. Carter, C. McDougall, H. H. Sherman, Hon. L. L. Shedden, Hon. A. Guibord and S. L. Wheeler, Esq. Stewards, L. D. Larkin, H. H. Jones, H. W. Guibord, O. T. Larkin, J. L. Signor, G. H. Anderson, W. C. Pike, C. C. Hodges, H. A. Wood, E. White, R. H. Guibord, C. J. Dale, and Dr. J. G. McKinney. Leaders, Frances Lewis, Lydia Arnold, Sarah Arnold, Caroline Stave, Alice Davidson, and Mary E. Craig: Sunday School Superintendent, S. L. Wheeler. Local Preacher, B. S. Cramer. President Epworth League, B. S. Cramer. The above named officers, together with Presiding Elder Rev. George Barrett and the pastor constitute the governing body of the local church. The present membership of the church is nearly 400. The pews are not rented but are assigned to permanent attendants, and yet all pews are free and the public are cordially invited to occupy them. The financial plan is that of weekly free-will offerings. The Sunday school and Epworth League are large and prosperous.

    3. Hi Mary, All I could find on Lambert Hopper is as follows: On page 353 the Town Of Saranac: Other pioneers were Lambert HOPPER, a local Methodist minister, who came in 1805, Wright SPAULDING, John CHAMBERLAIN, John M. HOPPER, Sylvanus SMITH, Lyman MUNLY, John GREGORY, Lewis and Isaac FERRIS and Isaac and John LAMBERT. Further on down the page under early schools: "Dr. Haynes states that the first school in this town was taught by Royal SPALDING. Dr. French makes the same statement in his "Gazetter" (1860). There seems to be a diversity of opinion in this matter, as the PLATTSBURGH REPUBLICAN says, "The first school in the town was kept by John HOPPER, son of Lambert HOPPER (mentioned previously), in Ezekiel PEARCE'S house and Royal SPALDING was the second school-master". On page 358 under the heading of Methodist Episcopal Church of Saranac. "Among the early members were A. B. VAUGHN, Jared SPAULDDING, Lambert HOPPER, George PARSON, Platt THORN, James L. BEAN, Thos. HOYT, Stewart FRAZER, Andrew HULL, Zebulon BURKE, Joshua and Nathan ARNOLD, Samuel and Z. S. HAYNES, Samuel WEAVER, Henry PARSONS, John SATFORD, Alfred FLING, and E. B. GRISWOLD. 2. Thanks Sue. I had seen that John Hopper was an early teacher but did not know about the controversy. Interesting. also interesting that John Gregory is listed. 2. Dick Ward is the Methodist Church's historian. (He's also the genealogical historian for the public library). He suggested that if you have specific names he will look through the church's archives to see what he can find. (The archives stashed in his memory are pretty terrific as well.) Dick jmentioned that a couple of other churches have merged with the Plattsburgh church--West Chazy for one, don't remember the others. Records for those churches are stored there aa well. You may sent requests to the church or to Dick's house directly (I would do that, he may have information in his home files as well). If you want his home address, please send an e-mail to me and I will send it to you. Linda Guynup Dewey San Francisco Researching in Clinton County: Guynup, Hare, Butler, Mallory

    1. Re: [NYCLINTO-L] FIRST METHODIST CHURCH IN PLATTSBURGH--Hopper
    2. Sue, all I know for sure is that Lambert came to Clinton Co from Orange/Rockland Co after the Revolutionary War. He is listed in the 1790 census in Plattsburg. The family lived in the Saranac area. Around 1830 Lambert's sons John and Cornelius moved to Illinois. Lambert lived for a time with his son Nathaniel in western NY/Erie Co, PA, then moved on to Ill where he died 1833. His second wife, Lovica (who at the time of her marriage to Lambert was the widow of John Moore) apparently remained in Clinton Co. Lambert's first wife, Abbey, died 1813. 2. Hello Andree, Would you be so kind as to look up the marriage, if any, for ADAMS, James b. abt 1810 and BALLARD, Grace b. abt 1810 Parents unknown for either, but they had children by the early 1830s. Two of their children died young: William d. 5 Jul 1834 Sarah d. 8 Apr 1840. I guess there would be no information on either of them as the dates are too early. Thank you so very much. 3. Hi List, I was reading the history of Plattsburgh last evening when I came across the churches of Plattsburgh and the original members of the different churches. Under the original Methodist Church of Plattsburgh, my relative, Peter Roberts and his wife, were members. Now my questions. Does this church still exist? If so does anyone have the name and address to write for information. If this church does not exist, what church would have their old records now? Since it is impossible to get information from the town and county of Plattsburgh, the church is my next resort to finding any "proof" of parentage, marriage, etc. I do own the McLellan List for the family I am interested in but that does not show proof of parents to children, etc. in most cases. Thanks for any help. If I should print out these membership rolls for the different denominations, including pastors, I would like to hear from the list owner. They may end up being posted here and on the Clinton County Webpage. Sue Jones [email protected]

    1. [NYCLINTO-L] Elezer SISCO, Uri SISCO before 1825
    2. David J. Ellis
    3. Im new to this particular list having just pushed my family line back to a suspected connection into this Clinton county. I would like to introduce myself, offer the information I already have, and request any any help in extending it. I'm Dave Ellis helping my mother-in-law research her family tree. Her family is mostly from Vermont but the roots go back into NY, some of them possibly into Clinton county. I'm actually working on a Sisco line that is in Swanton, Franklin Co., VT. This is really a case of having eliminated every possibility in Vermont, the only plausible one left is in Clinton County. Elezer Sisco first shows up in Sunapee NH in 1776 with a William Sisco. The relationship between these two is not clear, possibly they are brothers. Elezer must be about 16 at least as he is a signer of the Revolutionary Association. That puts his DOB before 1760 so he could be a brother of William who was born in 1749. Anyway, by 1790 William has crossed the Connecticutt river and is in Weathersfield VT. There is another male living with him who is too old be be one of William's children. It could be Elezer as he is no longer showing up in NH. Later William moves up into the Burlington VT area and eventually to Franklin VT where he dies in 1832. My theory is that Elezer may also have gone towards Burlington but continued on into Clinton Co. where he shows up in the early 1800's. I also believe I've eliminated the Sisco's from the West Haven VT region as I can find none of them coming north at an early enough date. I've traced my Sisco line back to a Uri Sisco who was born before 1810, location unknown. He marries in Swanton VT in 1823. I'm trying to determine if Uri might be the son of Elezer and whether Elezer really is the one who shows up in NH in 1776. I have eliminated William from this search and all his sons are accounted for. {Two of them started the Sisco lines in Troy/Jay VT and one stayed in the Weathersfield are VT region. My Vermont line is: Descendants of Uri Sisco 1 Uri Sisco b: Bef. 1810 +Roby Pollet (maybe Ruby Potter) b: Bet. 1805 - 1807 VT m: 20-Mar-1823 . 2 Enos P. Sisco b: Abt. 1825 VT . +Lavina A.
